Turkey will establish a 'safe zone' in Syria
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday he had discussed with President Donald Trump the issue of establishing Turkey as a safe area in Syria free from armed groups.
Erdogan said he had made a "very positive" phone call with the US president, during which Trump said that "we are setting up a security zone ... with a width of more than 30 km" along the Turkish border.
"We hope we have reached an understanding with Trump (about Syria)," Trump told a parliamentary bloc of the Justice and Development Party in parliament.
"We now have terrorist elements in Manbaj and in the east of the Euphrates (north of Syria), as well as the remnants of an advocate," he said.
The contact, which took place on Monday, came after Trump threatened Turkey with economic ruin if its troops attacked the US-backed Kurdish People's Protection Units.
Turkey regards the People's Protection Units as an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has waged an armed campaign for decades in Turkish territory.
President Trump wrote on Twitter: "We will attack again from an existing neighbor base if he re-sets up his ranks ... We will destroy Turkey economically if it hits the Kurds ... Set up a safe zone 20 miles ... Similarly, we do not want the Kurds to provoke Turkey."
Asked what Trump meant by economic destruction, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said, "You have to ask the president." "We have applied economic sanctions in many places, I suppose he is talking about such things," he said during a visit to Saudi Arabia.
