وأكد بيان دار الصحافة التابعة للكرسي الرسولي أن الجانببن توقفا في محادثاتهما عند الوضع الإقليمي، وأهمية حل الصراعات الراهنة بالطرق السلمية، وتحقيق النمو الاجتماعي والاقتصادي في القارة الأفريقية. وتم التطرق بنوع خاص إلى التزام أثيوبيا من أجل تحقيق الاستقرار في منطقة القرن الأفريقي، مع الإشارة إلى التفاهم الذي تم التوصل إليه مؤخرا بين أثيوبيا وإرتريا واستئناف العلاقات الدبلوماسية بين البلدين الجارين.
تجدر الإشارة هنا إلى أن البابا فرنسيس وفي الخطاب التقليدي الذي ألقاه أمام أعضاء السلك الدبلوماسي المعتمد لدى الكرسي الرسولي لمناسبة تبادل التهاني بحلول العام الجديد في السابع من كانون الثاني يناير الجاري تطرق إلى الخطوات الهامة التي تم تحقيقها على الصعيد العالمي فيما يتعلق بجهود السلام، ولم تخل كلمته من الإشارة إلى الاتفاق السلمي الذي وُقع بين أثيوبيا وإريتيريا.

وفي ختام اللقاء، تبادل الطرفان الهدايا، إذ قدم رئيس الوزراء للبابا فرنسيس هدية من الأقمشة الإثيوبية التقليدية، إلى جانب لوحة للمسيح المخلص. من جانبه قدم بابا الفاتيكان لرئيس الوزراء الإثيوبي ميدالية مع صورة لحفنة من الذرة وعنقودا من العنب في الصحراء، وهي إشارة، كما أوضح البابا، إلى نبوءة أشعيا، بأن الصحراء ستتحول يوم ما إلى حديقة غناء. كما أعطى البابا فرانسيس رئيس الوزراء نسخة من نص رسالة اليوم العالمي للسلام ، ونسخة من أربع وثائق حبريّة أخرى.
