Egypt, Israel and Jordan cooperate in the new gas forum

Egypt is hosting the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum, in cooperation with Israel, Egypt, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority. The EU Energy Commission is the observer for the Forum. The first meeting of the forum was held this week, and the forum was officially announced in May
The forum includes countries producing and consuming natural gas, but not Lebanon, which last year announced a tender for the production of gas in its shores in the Middle East. Part of the tender included a water barrier adjacent to Israeli territorial waters, despite Israeli warnings of damage expected to befall Israeli communities. The Palestinian Authority has not extracted gas from the compounds it has acquired from Israel and appears to have joined the Forum for political reasons. Jordan is a major consumer of Egyptian gas and is expected to increase its purchases of natural gas from Israel
"This is another proof that the benefit of developing gas complexes is not only economic and environmental, but also geopolitical and political," said Israeli Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz, who took part in the meeting in Cairo. During the visit, Steinitz held bilateral meetings, among other meetings, with Egyptian Energy Minister Tariq Al-Mulla. During the talks, the two ministers talked about energy cooperation between Israel and Egypt, including cooperation in exporting gas from Israel and Egypt to Europe

تقيم مصر منتدى غاز شرق المتوسط، بالتعاون مع إسرائيل، مصر، إيطاليا، اليونان، قبرص، الأردن، والسلطة الفلسطينية. مفوضية الطاقة التابعة للاتحاد الأوروبي هي المراقبة على المنتدى. أقيم اللقاء الأول للمنتدى هذا الأسبوع، وأعلِن فيه عن إقامة المنتدى بشكل رسمي في شهر أيار القادم.
يتضمن المنتدى دولا مصنّعة ومستهلكة للغاز الطبيعي، ولكن لا يشارك فيه لبنان الذي أعلن، في السنة الماضية، عن مناقصة لإنتاج الغاز في شواطئه في الشرق الأوسط. تضمن جزء من المناقصة حاجزا مائيا محاذيا للمياه الإقليمية الإسرائيلية، رغم التحذيرات الإسرائيلية من ضرر متوقع أن يلحق بالمجمعات الإسرائيلية. لم تستخرج السلطة الفلسطينية الغاز من المجمعات التي حصلت عليها من إسرائيل، ويبدو أنها انضمت إلى المنتدى لأسباب سياسية. الأردن هو مستهلك كبير للغاز المصري، ويتوقع أن يزيد حجم مشترياته للغاز الطبيعي من إسرائيل.
قال وزير الطاقة الإسرائيلي، يوفال شتاينتس، الذي شارك في اللقاء في القاهرة، “هذا هو إثبات آخر على أن الفائدة من تطوير مجمّعات الغاز هي ليست اقتصادية وبيئية فحسب، بل فائدة جيوسياسية وسياسية. في الواقع، يجري الحديث عن التعاون الاقتصادي الأهم بين إسرائيل ومصر منذ التوقيع على اتفاقية السلام بين الدول”.

خلال الزيارة، أجرى الوزير شتاينتس لقاءات ثنائية، من بين لقاءات أخرى، مع وزير الطاقة المصري، طارق الملا. خلال المحادثات، تحدث الوزيران عن التعاون في مجال الطاقة بين إسرائيل ومصر، بما فيه التعاون في مجال تصدير الغاز من إسرائيل ومصر إلى أوروبا.
