A US-Russian clash in the Security Council

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called on the world to "choose a side" in the Venezuelan crisis and urged support for Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guido and calls for free and fair elections as soon as possible. Moscow accused Washington of supporting a coup in the Latin country.

Pompeo spoke before the 15-nation UN Security Council and met at his request after Washington and a number of regional states recognized Guido as president of Venezuela and urged President Nicolas Maduro to step down.

"The time has come for each country to choose aside, no more delay, no more procrastination, either stand with the forces of freedom, or be complicit with Maduro and his subordinates," Pompeo told the council.

"We call on all members of the Security Council to support the democratic transition in Venezuela and the role of interim President Guido in it."

Russia, which opposes US efforts and accused Washington of backing a coup attempt in Venezuela, failed to prevent the meeting from being held.

"Venezuela is not a threat to peace and security," Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vasily Nibenzia said at the same meeting.

"If there is a threat to peace, it is the work of the United States and its shameful and aggressive allies that aim to overthrow the democratically elected president of Venezuela."

On Saturday, Russia, China, South Africa and Equatorial Guinea blocked a US bid for a UN Security Council statement expressing full support for the Venezuelan National Assembly as the "only democratically elected institution" in the country.

The four countries also voted against a Security Council meeting, while nine countries voted in favor of the meeting, while Ivory Coast and Indonesia abstained.

Pompeo accused Russia and China of supporting a failed regime in the hope of restoring billions of dollars in investment and aid.

دعا وزير الخارجية الأميركي مايك بومبيو دول العالم "لاختيار جانب" في أزمة فنزويلا، وحث على دعم زعيم المعارضة الفنزويلية خوان غوايدو والدعوة لإجراء انتخابات حرة ونزيهة في أقرب وقت ممكن، فيما اتهمت موسكو واشنطن بدعم انقلاب في البلد اللاتيني.

وكان بومبيو يتحدث أمام مجلس الأمن الدولي الذي يضم 15 بلدا عضوا، واجتمع بناء على طلبه بعد أن اعترفت واشنطن وعدد من دولا لمنطقة بغوايدو رئيسا لفنزويلا، وحثت الرئيس نيكولاس مادورو على التنحي.

وقال بومبيو أمام المجلس: "آن الأوان لأن تختار كل دولة جانبا. لا مزيد من التأخير، ولا مزيد من المماطلة. إما أن تقفوا مع قوى الحرية، أو أن تكونوا متواطئين مع مادورو وفوضاه".

وأضاف: "ندعو جميع أعضاء مجلس الأمن لدعم التحول الديمقراطي في فنزويلا ودور الرئيس المؤقت غوايدو فيه".

وكانت روسيا التي تعارض الجهود الأميركية واتهمت واشنطن بدعم محاولة انقلاب في فنزويلا، فشلت في منع عقد الاجتماع.

وقال سفير روسيا لدى الأمم المتحدة فاسيلي نيبينزيا في الجلسة ذاتها، إن "فنزويلا لا تمثل تهديدا للسلام والأمن".

وتابع: "إذا كان هناك ما يمثل تهديدا للسلام، فإنه عمل الولايات المتحدة وحلفائها المخزي والعدواني الذي يهدف إلى إطاحة برئيس فنزويلا المنتخب بصورة شرعية".

وعرقلت روسيا والصين وجنوب أفريقيا وغينيا الاستوائية، السبت، مسعى أميركيا لاستصدار بيان في مجلس الأمن الدولي يعبر عن تأييد كامل للجمعية الوطنية الفنزويلية، باعتبارها "المؤسسة الوحيدة المنتخبة ديمقراطيا" في البلاد.

وصوتت الدول الأربع أيضا ضد عقد اجتماع مجلس الأمن، فيما صوتت 9 دول لصالح عقد الاجتماع، بينما امتنعت ساحل العاج وإندونيسيا عن التصويت.

واتهم بومبيو روسيا والصين بدعم نظام فاشل على أمل استعادة استثمارات ومساعدات بمليارات الدولارات.
