Bicentennial of the birth of Frederick Douglass

Bicentennial of the birth of Frederick Douglass "The Lion of Anacostia" Celebrate 200 Years of the Life and Legacy of Frederick Douglass February 2018 made 200 years since the birth of Frederick Douglass. Born enslaved, he sought freedom and against all odds, rose to a life of honor by becoming a statesman, journalist, activist, hero and so much more.  WE Join on a yearlong commemoration as we honor Douglass's life, his connection to the community and his commitment to social justice during the bicentennial year of his birth. Black History Month — Carter G. Woodson by jilldennison

Black History Month — Carter G. Woodson by jilldennison Today is February 1st and, as such, is the first day of Black History Month, celebrated in the U.S. throughout the month.  For literally centuries Black people have been sold into slavery, abused, brutalized, and murdered for no reason other than the colour of their skin.  The saddest thing of all is that in this, the 21st century, there are still large numbers of people who believe that Black people are somehow ‘inferior’ to whites.  We’ve abolished slavery, seen societal and legal strides toward equality, overthrown Jim Crow, and still … today in the United States, Black people face frequent barriers to equality and sometimes barriers to life itself. In the skies above the Suez Canal, Egyptian soldiers and the operators of the Soviet surface-to-air-missile batteries, dozens of Israel Air Force fighter jets appeared. It was the start of Operation Etgar, which aimed to put an end to the threat posed by the Soviet weapons, which in the past months had made their way, with their Russian operating technicians, to the canal stubbornly and persistently. The air force had no means to counter the deadly weapon. But that situation was ostensibly about to change. The Israeli F-4 Phantom fighter-bombers were armed with highly sophisticated U.S.-made electronic jamming equipment. The American technicians promised that a mysterious signal emitted by the electronic devices would paralyze the Russian SAMs. The new...
