Gulf War: The Qatar Army pushed the danger from Riyadh in the Battle of Khafji

Qatar's official television channel Wednesday broadcast a documentary about the participation of Qatari forces as a key force in the liberation of the Saudi city of Khafji during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in the 1990s.

The documentary revealed that Qatar had a faction in the Peninsula Shield. After the Iraqi invasion, the Qatari armed forces were ordered to send an infantry brigade with support weapons to defend Saudi Arabia and then liberate Kuwait.

"A military alliance was formed to liberate Kuwait. The Qatari response was immediate and at the highest level. It was the only country that sent half of its army to liberate Kuwait."

He pointed out that "the Qatari forces moved from Doha towards Saudi Arabia to ward off the imminent danger that was lurking in Riyadh from the expansion of Iraqi military operations to include its territory."

"The battle lasted five days until the city of Khafji was completely liberated by the Qatari armed forces," the documentary said.

It is noteworthy that the Iraqi forces, on January 29, 1991, the occupation of the Saudi city of Khafji, adjacent to the border with Kuwait.

The Khafji battle was the first major ground involvement of the Second Gulf War, and occurred in and around the Saudi city between January 29 and February 1, 1991.

بث تلفزيون قطر الرسمي، مساء اليوم الأربعاء، فيلماً وثائقياً حول مشاركة القوات القطرية كقوة رئيسية في تحرير مدينة الخفجي السعودية، إبان الغزو العراقي للكويت في التسعينيات.

وكشف الوثائقي عن أن قطر كان لها فصيل في درع الجزيرة، وبعد الغزو العراقي صدرت الأوامر للقوات المسلحة القطرية بإرسال لواء مشاة آلي مع أسلحة الدعم للدفاع عن السعودية ومن ثم تحرير الكويت.

وبيّن الوثائقي أنه تم "تشكيل تحالف عسكري لتحرير الكويت، وكانت الاستجابة القطرية فورية وعلى أعلى مستوى، حيث إنها الدولة الوحيدة التي أرسلت نصف جيشها لتحرير الكويت".

وأشار إلى أن "القوات القطرية تحركت من الدوحة نحو السعودية لدرء خطر محدق كان يتربص بالرياض من توسع العمليات العسكرية العراقية لتشمل أراضيها".

وذكر الوثائقي أنّ "المعركة استمرت 5 أيام حتى تم تحرير مدينة الخفجي السعودية تماماً، بفضل القوات القطرية المسلحة".

يشار إلى أن القوات العراقية قامت، في 29 يناير 1991، باحتلال مدينة الخفجي السعودية المتاخمة للحدود مع الكويت.

ومعركة الخفجي كانت أول مشاركة أرضية كبيرة لحرب الخليج الثانية، وحدث ذلك في المدينة السعودية وما حولها بين 29 يناير و1 فبراير 1991.
