وأكد باحث الشؤون العسكرية المصري في المنتدى العربي لتحليل السياسات محمد الكناني،  أن هناك اختلافا في الآراء حول هذا الموضوع، ولكن الرأي الشائع هو أن الجيش الأول الميداني هو الجيش الذي كان متواجدا إبان الوحدة العربية مع سوريا، وهي قوات تابعة للجيش المصري وأحد أفرعه إلى جانب الجيش السوري المتواجد على أرضه.
وتابع في تصريحات لـRT:" أن الجيش المصري احتفظ بالأسماء الخاصة بالجيشين الثاني والثالث، لأنهما شاركا في حروب السويس والإسماعيلية، وهناك معارك سجلت بأسماء الجيشين لذلك وجب الاحتفاظ بالأسماء الخاصة بهما."

وأوضح منتصر، أن الراحل عبدالناصر شكل أول حكومة في التاريخ ووضع أول خطة خمسية، مشيرا إلى أنه سعى إلى الوحدة مع سوريا بنوايا طيبة، مؤكدا أن انفصال مصر وسوريا كان جرحا عميقا للرئيس الراحل.
وأشار الكاتب المصري إلى أن الوحدة مع سوريا كانت أهم حدث في تاريخ مصر.
