Pentagon: Washington talks with Taliban are encouraging
US Defense Secretary Patrick Chanahan said in Washington Monday that peace talks between the United States and the Taliban to end the 17-year war in Afghanistan were "encouraging."
"I would like to say that the conclusions that have been drawn are encouraging," he told reporters ahead of a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.
The minister declined to comment on a question about the possible withdrawal of half of the 14,000 US troops from Afghanistan, which President Donald Trump wants, according to US officials.
For his part, Stoltenberg said it was "premature" to talk about the withdrawal of NATO troops from Afghanistan.
He also said peace talks with the Taliban were "encouraging". The US envoy to talks with the Afghan Taliban said on Saturday that "significant progress" had been made in the negotiations.
"The meetings here have been more fruitful than in the past," Zalmay Khalilzad wrote on Twitter after six days of talks with the Taliban in Qatar.
"Nothing will be agreed unless everything is agreed, everything must include a dialogue between the Afghans and a comprehensive cease-fire," he said.

أعلن وزير الدفاع الأميركي بالوكالة باتريك شاناهان في واشنطن الاثنين أن محادثات السلام بين الولايات المتحدة وطالبان لإنهاء الحرب المستمرة منذ 17 عاما في أفغانستان "مشجعة".
وقال للصحافيين قبل لقاء الأمين العام لحلف شمال الاطلسي ينس ستولتنبرغ، "أود أن أقول إن الاستنتاجات التي تم استخلاصها مشجعة".
وامتنع الوزير عن الرد على سؤال حول احتمال انسحاب نصف القوات الأميركية البالغ قوامها 14 ألف جندي من أفغانستان، وهو ما يريده الرئيس دونالد ترامب، وفق مسؤولين أميركيين.
وقال ستولتنبرغ من جهته، إنه "من السابق لأوانه" الحديث عن انسحاب قوات حلف الأطلسي من أفغانستان.
واعتبر أيضا أن محادثات السلام مع طالبان "مشجعة". وكان المبعوث الأميركي إلى المحادثات مع حركة طالبان الأفغانية قال السبت إنه تم إحراز "تقدم كبير" في المفاوضات.
وكتب زلماي خليل زاد على تويتر بعد ستة أيام من المحادثات مع طالبان في قطر "الاجتماعات التي جرت هنا كانت مثمرة أكثر مما كانت في السابق. لقد أحرزنا تقدما كبيرا بشأن قضايا حيوية".

وأضاف "لن يتم الاتفاق على شيء إلا إذا تم الاتفاق على كل شيء. وكل شيء يجب أن يتضمن حوارا بين الأفغان ووقفا شاملا لإطلاق النار".
