وجاء البحث حول الموضوع في أجواء سياسية معقدة في إسرائيل، إذ إن رئيس الوزراء، بنيامين نتنياهو، يكثر من تصريحات استعراض ‏القوة، وكلما اقترب موعد تقديم لوائح الاتهام ضده في قضايا الفساد الثلاث، ترتفع تهديداته أكثر، على أمل أن تغطي إعلامياً على محاكمته. ‏ومن جهته، يريد الجيش وضع حد لحفر الأنفاق، وهو ليس معنياً بخوض حرب كبيرة؛ خصوصاً تحت قيادة "رئيس حكومة متورط في ‏القضاء ولديه حسابات قوية‎".‎ 
وقد سئل الناطق بلسان الجيش في هذا الموضوع، أمس، فرد قائلا: "كثيرون يرون أن توقيت العملية مرتبط بتوصية الشرطة بمحاكمة ‏رئيس الحكومة بشبهات فساد، لكن الحقيقة مغايرة‎.‎

ونقلت القناة العاشرة للتلفزيون الإسرائيلي عن مصدر مطلع على المداولات في الكابينيت قوله إن الجيش الإسرائيلي قدّر أنه بالإمكان ‏احتواء الحدث من دون أن يكون هناك رد فعل عسكري من جانب "حزب الله" وحدوث تصعيد، لكنه أضاف أنه ينبغي الاستعداد لاحتمال ‏التصعيد في جميع الأحوال‎.‎ 
من جانبه، قال رئيس كتلة "المعسكر الصهيوني" وعضو لجنة الخارجية والأمن في الكنيست، يوئيل حسون، إن "المعارضة تطالب ‏بأجوبة. هل هذه عملية (درع شمالي) أم عملية درع (حماية) نتنياهو؟" في إشارة إلى توصية الشرطة الإسرائيلية بتقديم نتنياهو للمحاكمة ‏بشبهات‎.‎ 
وذكرت القناة العاشرة، أن وزارة الخارجية الإسرائيلية أوعزت لسفرائها في أنحاء العالم بتمرير رسالة إلى المستويات العليا في الدول التي ‏يخدمون فيها، مفادها أن عملية الجيش الإسرائيلي عند الحدود مع لبنان "ضد أنفاق (حزب الله)، وهي دفاعية وتجري إلى الجنوب من ‏الحدود، وأن إسرائيل ليست معنية بالتصعيد‎".‎
رجح رئيس الوزراء الإسرائيلي بنيامين نتنياهو، أن يكون هناك تحرك إسرائيلي داخل لبنان، بحسبما أفادت مراسلتنا في القدس.
وطالب نتنياهو، لدى اجتماعه مع السفراء الأجانب المعتمدين لدى إسرائيل خلال جولة في منطقة الحدود الشمالية، "بإدانة خرق حزب الله للسيادة الإسرائيلية وأن ينضموا إلى المطالبة بفرض عقوبات مشددة على حزب الله".

وأشار، بأن "عملية درع الشمال لا تزال في مراحلها الأولية، ولكن في ختامها سلاح الأنفاق الذي بذل حزب الله جهودا جبارة على تطويره سيزول ولن يكون فعالا".

وفي وقت سابق اليوم حض الجيش الإسرائيلي المنخرط في حملة على أنفاق مزعومة لـ "حزب الله" اللبناني، قوات الأمم المتحدة في لبنان (يونيفيل) على التحرك لتدمير شبكة سرية زعم أنه رصدها في الأراضي اللبنانية الملاصقة للحدود مع إسرائيل.
وقال الجيش الإسرائيلي، إنه أرسل إلى قوات "يونيفيل" خريطة لمنطقة "الرامية" في جنوب لبنان يمتد نفق تحتها، يبدأ من الجانب الإسرائيلي للحدود وينتهي في بلدة زرعيت اللبنانية.
