Sudanese opposition leader Sadiq al-Mahdi on Saturday called for a "new regime under a new presidency" in his country following protests in various parts of Sudan following the announcement of an increase in bread prices.
Mahdi, the former prime minister of Sudan, said he refused to talk about a compromise with the ruling National Congress Party led by President Omar al-Bashir.
"We are talking about what we call a new regime under a new presidency," he told a news conference in Omdurman. "The issue is not who governs Sudan but how Sudan governs
The Mahdi said that 22 people were killed during the demonstrations that rocked a number of cities in the country in recent days

دعا زعيم حزب الأمة السوداني المعارض الصادق المهدي السبت إلى "نظام جديد برئاسة جديدة" في بلاده على أثر التظاهرات التي اجتاحت مختلف أرجاء السودان في أعقاب إعلان زيادة في أسعار الخبز.
وقال المهدي، رئيس وزراء السودان الأسبق، إنه يرفض الحديث عن التوصل إلى تسوية مع حزب المؤتمر الوطني الحاكم الذي يتزعمه الرئيس عمر البشير.
وأوضح في مؤتمر صحافي بأم درمان: "نتكلم عما نسميه نظام جديد برئاسة جديدة ... القضية ليست من يحكم السودان ولكن كيف يحكم السودان".
وأشار المهدي إلى أن 22 شخصا قتلوا خلال التظاهرات التي هزت عددا من مدن البلاد في الأيام الأخيرة.
وكانت الاحتجاجات على ارتفاع أسعار الخبز بدأت الأربعاء في مدينتي بورتسودان شرق البلاد وعطبرة شمالها وامتدت الخميس الى مدن أخرى بينها الخرطوم. وتجددت التظاهرات يومي الجمعة والسبت.
وأدى قرار الحكومة خلال الأسبوع الجاري زيادة أسعار الخبز من جنيه إلى ثلاثة جنيهات سودانية إلى احتجاجات سقط فيها 12 قتيلا على الأقل، حسبما أفاد به مراسل "الحرة".
وقال المهدي إن "هذا التحرك مشروع قانونا" ومرتبط "بتردي الأوضاع"، مؤكدا أن "هذه التحركات سوف تستمر والناس يحركها تردي الخدمات".
والمهدي الذي يقود أحد أقدم الأحزاب السياسية في السودان، كان آخر رئيس للحكومة منتخب ديمقراطيا. وقد طرد من السلطة بانقلاب حمل الرئيس الحالي عمر البشير إلى السلطة في 1989. وقد اضطر لمغادرة البلاد مرات عدة وعاد هذا الأسبوع.
ويشهد السودان صعوبات اقتصادية متزايدة مع بلوغ نسبة التضخم حوالي 70 بالمئة وتراجع سعر الجنيه السوداني مقابل الدولار الأميركي.
لليوم الرابع على التوالي شهدت مدن سودانية مظاهرات شعبية منددة بالوضع الاقتصادي المتدهور وارتفاع أسعار الخبر وتدني قيمة العملة.
وأفاد مراسل "الحرة" في الخرطوم بخروج مظاهرة حاشدة في مدينة الرهد بولاية شمال كردفان حيث أقدم متظاهرون على حرق مقر الحزب الحاكم في المدينة.
وأفادت الأنباء الواردة من السودان بأن السلطات شنت حملة اعتقالات واسعة طالت قادة أحزاب معارضة، فيما دعت نقابة الأطباء لإضراب شامل في المستشفيات باستثناء الطوارئ.
وارتفع عدد قتلى الاحتجاجات إلى 12 شخصا لقوا مصرعهم خلال مظاهرات في القضارف وعطبرة.
وقالت الحكومة إن جهات سياسية لم تسمها استغلت الاحتجاجات الشعبية في البلاد، مشيرة إلى أن المظاهرات السلمية انحرفت عن مسارها وسط قرار بإغلاق الجامعات.
وذكرت وسائل الإعلام المحلية أن السلطات أعلنت حالات الطوارئ وحظر التجول بمدن في ما لا يقل عن أربع ولايات من ولايات السودان البالغ عددها 18.
وقالت محطة سودانية 24 التلفزيونية الخاصة إن وزارة التعليم علقت الدراسة في بعض المدارس والجامعات في الخرطوم وولايات القضارف والنيل الأبيض ونهر النيل.
وأصدر الرئيس عمر البشير السبت قرارا بتعيين مبارك محمد شمت وهو ضابط في جهاز الأمن والمخابرات، واليا جديدا لمنطقة القضارف التي شهدت احتجاجات، خلفا للوالي ميرغني صالح الذي قتل في حادث تحطم مروحية قبل أسابيع.
وبدأت الاحتجاجات على ارتفاع أسعار الخبز الأربعاء في مدينتي بورتسودان شرقي البلاد وعطبره شمالها وامتدت الخميس إلى مدن أخرى بينها الخرطوم.
وكانت المدن السودانية قد عانت من شح في الخبز على مدى الاسابيع الثلاثة الماضية.
ويستهلك السودان 2.5 مليون طن قمح سنويا ينتج منها 40 في المئة ويواجه البنك المركزي صعوبات في توفير النقد الأجنبي لمقابلة الاستيراد منذ انفصال جنوب السودان عنه في عام 2011 وفقدان البلاد لعائدات النفط والذي كان يبلغ 470 الف برميل يوميا.
