وردت تصريحات إيزنكوت، اليوم الأحد، خلال أعمال مؤتمر "الجيش والمجتمع الإسرائيلي" الذي ينظمه المركز المتعدد المجالات في "هرتسليا"، بمشاركة غادي إيزنكوت ورئيس المحكمة العليا السابق أهارون باراك والقاضية السابقة دوريت بينيش.

كان مسؤولون كبار في الأجهزة الأمنية الإسرائيلية قد تحدثوا في الأسابيع الأخيرة، عن أهمية من الدرجة الأولى لبقاء القوات الأمريكية هناك، حتى في ظل الضغوطات الروسية على إيران لتقليص عمليات نقل الأسلحة لحزب الله عن طريق سوريا.
كان ترمب متحفظا منذ البداية بشأن استمرار وجود القوات الأمريكية في المنطقة، عندما تحدث عن "أمريكا أولا"، خلال حملته الانتخابية، من خلال تقليص الاستثمار العسكري في الشرق الأوسط. وبعد أشهر من تسلمه مهام منصبه، استجاب لطلب قادة الجيش الأمريكي، وأبقى القوات الأمريكية في سوريا التي يصل عددها حاليا لنحو ألفي جندي.

حسمت لجنة تعيين كبار المسؤولين الإسرائيليين برئاسة القاضي إليعازر غولدبيرغ الأحد الماضي جدلا ثار في إسرائيل بشأن اختيار الجنرال عفيف كوخافي رئيسا جديدا لأركان جيش الاحتلال الإسرائيلي.
يوم الجمعة الماضي، قرر وزير الدفاع الإسرائيلي أفيغدور ليبرمان، ترشيح رئيس جديد لأركان الجيش هو اللواء عفيف كوخافي، نائب رئيس الأركان الحالي، وذلك بعكس رغبة رئيس الوزراء بنيامين نتنياهو الذي أراد المنصب لسكرتيره العسكري السابق اللواء أيالون زمير، الذي يرتاح له أكثر.
وفقا لوسائل إعلام إسرائيلية، بدأ ليبرمان قبل شهرين في إجراء مقابلات مع 4 جنرالات مرشحين للمنصب بمن فيهم كوخافي، كما أجرى مشاورات خارج السلك العسكري، ولكنه لم يستطع التوصل لقرار بسبب خلافه مع نتنياهو.
قرر ليبرمان اختيار عفيف كوخافي من دون تنسيق مع نتنياهو، ليضعه أمام أمر واقع.
يعد استقبال نتنياهو للجنرال عفيف كوخافي بمثابة موافقة صريحة من رئاسة الوزراء على تعيينه في المنصب الجديد.

ولاية رئيس الأركان الإسرائيلي الحالي اللواء غادي إيزنكوت، تنتهي في الأول من يناير (كانون الثاني) 2019. ومن المفترض أن يبدأ كوخافي مهام منصبه الجديد في الأول من كانون الثاني/ يناير المقبل بعد ترقيته الي رتبة فريق.
