Chancellor Angela Merkel has appealed to her Christian Democrats to unite. She also called for the defense of the values of "democratic Christianity" in a farewell speech that was not without personal touches, as her last speech as the party leader in which members called for unity and solidarity

"The Christian Democratic Party and the Bavarian Christian Social Party have bitterly learned in recent years where a never-ending conflict is leading us," Merkel said. The Christian Democratic Party and the Bavarian party form the so-called Christian Alliance. Merkel's words come as the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) general assembly today chose a new party leadership after Merkel took office for 18 years. The competition in the forthcoming voting intensifies with eagerness between the party's general secretary, Anjrit Kramp-Karnbauer, and the former chairman of the party's parliamentary bloc, Friedrich Mertz. Joining the list of competitors is Federal Health Minister Yens Young, but his chances of winning are weak. There are fears within the party of the growing gap between the different wings within him after the selection of his new leadership
A 1001 delegate will participate in the new leadership. In October, Merkel announced her intention to give up the party's presidency while retaining the chancellery. Merkel also announced that she will not run for the next parliamentary elections and will not compete for the post of chancellor again after the end of the current legislative term in 2021
More than 2,000 journalists from around the world are expected to cover the election. About 1,500 guests attend the party's historic general conference. The party's executive director, Klaus Schuler, said after the meetings of the party's leadership council Thursday evening that there are so far three candidates for the party leadership, adding that the number of candidates could increase if a new candidate is proposed during the general conference of the party. Scholler said the winner would get the majority of the right votes, adding that there would be a re-run if one of the candidates could not get the majority in the first round. Schuler said the election of the party leadership could be completed on Friday, the first day of the party's general conference, but he did not say whether a new secretary-general would be elected today

في خطاب مؤثر..ميركل تدعو للدفاع عن قيم "الديموقراطية والمسيحية"
ناشدت المستشارة أنغيلا ميركل حزبها المسيحي الديمقراطي توحيد الصف. كما دعت إلى الدفاع عن القيم "المسيحية الديموقراطية" في خطاب وداع لم يخلو من لمسات شخصية، كآخر خطاب لها كرئيسة للحزب دعت فيه الأعضاء للوحدة والتضافر.
أكدت أنغيلا ميركل اليوم (الجمعة السابع من ديسمبر/ كانون الأول 2018) خلال المؤتمر العام للحزب الذي سينتخب قيادة جديدة خلفا لها، على أهمية الدفاع عن القيم "الديموقراطية المسيحية". كما أكدت على الشعار الذي اختارته للمؤتمر العام للحزب "الدمج. والقيادة المشتركة"، مضيفة أن حزبها يستحق تولي القيادة في ألمانيا كحزب شعبي يمثل تيار الوسط السياسي.
واستطردتا ميركل قائلة "أدرك الحزب المسيحي الديمقراطي والحزب المسيحي الاجتماعي البافاري، بمرارة خلال السنوات الأخيرة إلى أين يقودنا خلاف لا ينتهي". تجدر الإشارة إلى أن الحزب المسيحي الديمقراطي والحزب البافاري يشكلان ما يعرف باسم (التحالف المسيحي). وأضافت ميركل أن وحدة المسيحيين الديمقراطيين تقود في المقابل إلى وجهة واضحة، وهي تنصيب الحزب المسيحي الديمقراطي والحزب المسيحي الاجتماعي البافاري للمستشار الألماني على مدار 50 عاما من إجمالي 70 عاما في تاريخ جمهورية ألمانيا الاتحادية.
وتأتي كلمات ميركل الواعظة على خلفية اختيار المؤتمر العام للحزب المسيحي الديمقراطي اليوم قيادة جديدة للحزب، وذلك بعد أن شغلت ميركل المنصب على مدار 18 عاما. وتحتدم المنافسة في التصويت المرتقب بشغف بين الأمينة العامة للحزب أنجريت كرامب-كارنباور والرئيس الأسبق للكتلة البرلمانية للحزب فريدريش ميرتس. وينضم إلى قائمة المنافسين وزير الصحة الاتحادي ينز شبان، إلا أن فرصه في الفوز تعد ضعيفة. وهناك مخاوف داخل الحزب من تزايد الفجوة بين الأجنحة المختلفة داخله عقب اختيار قيادته الجديدة.
وسيشارك في الاقتراع 1001 مندوب في الحزب القيادة الجديدة. وكانت ميركل أعلنت في تشرين الأول / أكتوبر الماضي عزمها التخلي عن رئاسة الحزب، مع احتفاظها بمنصب المستشارية. كما أعلنت ميركل أنها لن تترشح للانتخابات البرلمانية المقبلة ولن تنافس على منصب المستشارية مجددا عقب انتهاء الفترة التشريعية الحالية في 2021.
ومن المنتظر أن يقوم بتغطية فعاليات الانتخابات أكثر من ألفي صحفي من كافة أنحاء العالم. ويشارك في المؤتمر العام التاريخي للحزب نحو 1500 ضيف. وكان المدير التنفيذي للحزب، كلاوس شولر، ذكر عقب اجتماعات لمجلس قيادة الحزب مساء أمس الخميس أنه يوجد حتى الآن ثلاثة مرشحين لرئاسة الحزب، موضحا في المقابل أنه بالإمكان أن يزداد عدد المرشحين إذا تم اقتراح مرشح جديد خلال انعقاد المؤتمر العام للحزب. وأضاف شولر أن المرشح الفائز هو الذي سيحصل على غالبية الأصوات الصحيحة، موضحا أنه سيكون هناك جولة إعادة حال عدم تمكن أحد المرشحين من الحصول على الأغلبية في الجولة الأولى. وذكر شولر أنه يمكن إتمام عملية انتخاب قيادة الحزب بالكامل اليوم الجمعة؛ اليوم الأول للمؤتمر العام للحزب، إلا أنه لم يوضح ما إذا كان سيجرى أيضا انتخاب أمين عام جديد للحزب اليوم.
