وجاء في المقال: وقف وزير الخارجية الألماني، هايكو ماس، ضد نشر صواريخ أمريكية متوسطة المدى في أوروبا. أمر مفهوم أن يخشى الألمان مثل هذا "الدفاع ضد التهديد الروسي".. فهل تملك برلين القوة والقدرة على القيام بمثل هذه التمرد على سفينة الناتو؟

في الوقت نفسه، اعترف غيردت بأنه سيكون من الصعب للغاية على الأوروبيين مقاومة خطط الأمريكيين نشر الصواريخ، بسبب تبعيتهم المالية والسياسية الشديدة للولايات المتحدة، فقال: "من أجل تحمل هذا الضغط، نحتاج إلى إقامة علاقات مع جارنا الآخر في أقرب وقت ممكن من أجل خلق توازن... إذا لم نحسّن العلاقات مع الشرق، فإننا لن نحتمل ضغط الغرب. والطريق الصحيح الوحيد هو رفع العقوبات والشروع في حوار طبيعي مع الشرق"..
