Former British ambassador to Damascus: Arab countries except one are ready to return Syria to the bosom of the university
Former British Ambassador to Damascus Peter Ford believes that all but one Arab country is ready today to accept Syria's return to the League of Arab States
"I think all Arab countries are ready today to accept the return of Syria, except perhaps Qatar, which has supported the Muslim Brotherhood over the years and is running a campaign," Ford told the Russian news agency Novosti on Saturday. Incitement against the Syrian government 
The former diplomat said Syria's return to the Arab League would not satisfy Doha because of its funding for militants in Idlib, adding that Qatar's opposition would not prevent other Gulf states from resuming ties with Damascus
Commenting on Saudi Arabia's position on the issue, Ford said Riyadh, under intense pressure against the backdrop of the war in Yemen and the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, could not allow itself to be isolated and would have to "seek new friends in Damascus
The recent period witnessed what many analysts consider the beginning of the process of normalization of relations between Syria and its Arab region. Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir arrived in Damascus earlier this December and met with President al-Assad. This was followed by the reopening of the UAE embassy in Damascus and Bahrain's continuation of its embassy in the Syrian capital

سفير بريطانيا السابق لدى دمشق: الدول العربية باستثناء واحدة مستعدة لعودة سوريا إلى حضن الجامعة
أعرب سفير بريطانيا السابق لدى دمشق، بيتر فورد، عن اعتقاده بأن جميع الدول العربية باستثناء واحدة مستعدة اليوم لقبول عودة سوريا إلى جامعة الدول العربية.
وقال فورد، في حديث إلى وكالة "نوفوستي" الروسية اليوم السبت، ردا على سؤال حول إمكانية استئناف عضوية دمشق في الجامعة: "أعتقد أن جميع الدول العربية مستعدة اليوم لقبول عودة سوريا، ربما باستثناء قطر التي دعمت جماعة الإخوان المسلمين على مدى سنوات وتدير حملة تحريض ضد الحكومة السورية".
وقال الدبلوماسي السابق إن عودة سوريا إلى الجامعة العربية لن ترضي الدوحة بسبب تمويلها لمسلحين في إدلب، مضيفا أن معارضة قطر لن تمنع الدول الخليجية الأخرى من استئناف العلاقات مع دمشق .
وفي معرض تعليقه على موقف السعودية بشأن الموضوع، أشار فورد إلى أن الرياض التي تتعرض لضغوط قوية على خلفية الحرب في اليمن وقضية مقتل الصحفي جمال خاشقجي لا تستطيع أن تسمح لنفسها بالتعرض لعزلة وستضطر إلى "البحث عن أصدقاء جدد في دمشق".
وشهدت الفترة الأخيرة ما يعتبره الكثير من المحللين بدء عملية تطبيع العلاقات بين سوريا ومحيطها العربي، إذ وصل الرئيس السوداني عمر البشير في وقت سابق من ديسمبر الجاري دمشق والتقى الرئيس الأسد، وتلا ذلك إعادة فتح الإمارات سفارتها لدى دمشق وتأكيد البحرين استمرار عمل سفارتها في العاصمة السورية.
