Bouteflika's words in his letter of resignation were addressed to the Algerian people
Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika officially resigned on Tuesday following weeks of popular protests.
Bouteflika said in a letter of resignation: "I have resigned because of my concern that the country will not turn into a serious slide. I have decided to end my term as President of the Republic from Tuesday, April 2, 2019."
He added: "My intention to take this decision is to contribute to calming the souls of my countrymen, and I took the step in order to prevent the verbal controversies of the current situation."
"I have taken the necessary measures to ensure the continuity of the institutions of the state in the transitional period, and my resignation was intended to allow my people to move to a better future."

قدم الرئيس الجزائري عبد العزيز بوتفليقة استقالته رسمياً، اليوم الثلاثاء، وذلك في أعقاب أسابيع من الاحتجاجات الشعبية.
وعلى أثر هذه الخطوة، قال بوتفليقة في رسالة استقالته: "أقدمت على الاستقالة حرصاً مني على عدم تحول البلاد نحو انزلاقات وخيمة، وقررت إنهاء عهدتي بصفة رئيس الجمهورية اعتباراً من اليوم الثلاثاء 2 نيسان 2019".
وأضاف: "قصدي من اتخاذ هذا القرار هو الإسهام في تهدئة نفوس أبناء وطني، وأقدمت على الخطوة حرصاً مني على درء المهاترات اللفظية التي تشوب الوضع الراهن".

وتابع في رسالته: "لقد اتخذت الإجراءات المواتية اللازمة لديمومة سير مؤسسات الدولة في الفترة الانتقالية، وقصدت من استقالتي إتاحة المجال أمام شعبي للانتقال إلى المستقبل الأفضل".
