At a time when Sri Lankan officials have been silent about who was behind the bloody attacks that rocked the country on Sunday and left a shocking number of victims, they blamed an extremist group, whose name has been associated with a number of past crimes.
To date, no one has claimed responsibility for the attacks on two churches, four hotels in and around Colombo and a third church on the northeast coast of the country.
The Sri Lankan government has not yet issued any statement on the perpetrators of the attacks, which left 290 people dead and 500 others injured, but hints from Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe suggested the "unification group".
Wickremesinghe admitted on Sunday that the government had earlier obtained intelligence that churches might be attacked by an unknown militant group, adding that some security officials were "aware of the incident."
Sri Lankan Minister of Communications Haren Fernando published on his Twitter account a copy of the document that the government and intelligence received on April 11 under the title "Information on a possible attack", according to Sri Lanka's Daily Mirror.
The document states that the authorities must take precautionary measures because of a potential terrorist attack that may be carried out by an organization called the "Tawhid Group".
Fernando asked why this serious warning by the intelligence service was ignored and called for an investigation into the case.
The name "Tawhid Group" was associated with a number of crimes, which carry the character of extremism and racism, where about a year ago, a number of its leaders were tried on charges of ridiculing Buddhist statues and hurting the feelings of Buddhist society.
In addition to the warning, Sri Lanka is at the heart of conflicts between Christian and Buddhist groups, according to a US State Department report of 2018, which could reinforce another hypothesis about targeting Christians by Buddhist extremists.
The report pointed out that some Christian groups and churches have been told more than once about the pressure of Buddhist monks, who have repeatedly tried to close places of worship for Christians.
Christian groups say they have been increasingly intimidated by some Buddhist monks in recent years.
The security authorities announced the arrest of 13 people for involvement in the bloody bombings, without giving any details related to them or their ideological backgrounds.
Of Sri Lanka's 22 million people, 70 percent are Buddhists, 12.6 percent are Hindus, 9.7 percent are Muslims and 7.6 percent are Christians, according to the country's 2012 census.

في وقت يلتزم فيه مسؤولو سريلانكا الصمت، حتى الآن، بشأن الجهة التي تقف وراء الهجمات الدامية التي هزت البلاد الأحد، وخلفت عددا مروعا من الضحايا، وجهت أصابع الاتهام إلى جماعة متطرفة، ارتبط اسمها بعدد من الجرائم السابقة.
وإلى حدود الساعة، لم تعلن أي جهة مسؤوليتها عن الهجمات التي استهدفت كنيستين وأربعة فنادق في العاصمة كولومبو ومناطق واقعة حولها وكنيسة ثالثة في الساحل الشمالي الشرقي للبلاد.
كما أن الحكومة السريلانكية لم تخرج بعد بأي تصريح بشأن منفذي الهجمات، التي خلفت مقتل 290 شخصا وإصابة 500 آخرين، إلا أن تلميحات من رئيس الوزراء رانيل ويكرمسينغ رجحت كفة "جماعة التوحيد".
واعترف ويكرمسينغ، الأحد، بأن الحكومة توصلت في وقت سابق بمعلومات استخباراتية تفيد باحتمال تعرض كنائس لهجمات من قبل جماعة متشددة غير معروفة، مشيرا إلى أن بعض المسؤولين الأمنيين "كانوا على علم بالحادثة".
ووفق ما ذكر موقع "دايلي ميرور" السريلانكي، فإن وزير الاتصال السريلانكي، هارين فرناندو، نشر على حسابه في تويتر، صورة للوثيقة التي حصلت عليها الحكومة والاستخبارات يوم 11 أبريل، تحت عنوان "معلومة بشأن هجوم محتمل".
وتقول الوثيقة إن على السلطات أن تتخذ إجراءات احترازية بسبب هجوم إرهابي محتمل قد تنفذه منظمة تدعى "جماعة التوحيد".
وتساءل فرناندو عن سبب تجاهل هذا التحذير الجدي الذي توصلت به الاستخبارات، مطالبا بالتحقيق في القضية.
وارتبط اسم "جماعة التوحيد" بعدد من الجرائم، التي تحمل طابع التطرف والعنصرية، حيث حوكم، قبل نحو سنة، عدد من قياداتها بتهم السخرية من التماثيل البوذية وإيذاء مشاعر المجتمع البوذي.
وإلى جانب هذا التحذير، تعيش سريلانكا على وقع صراعات بين الجماعات المسيحية والبوذية، وفق ما كشف تقرير لوزارة الخارجية الأميركية عام 2018، وهو ما قد يعزز فرضية أخرى بشأن استهداف المسيحيين من طرف متطرفين بوذيين.
وأوضح التقرير أن بعض الجماعات المسيحية والكنائس أبلغت أكثر من مرة عن تعرضها لضغوط من رهبان بوذيين، حاولوا مرارا إغلاق أماكن العبادة للمسيحيين.
وتقول جماعات مسيحية إنها تعرضت لترهيب متزايد من بعض الرهبان البوذيين المتطرفين في السنوات الأخيرة.
وكانت السلطات الأمنية أعلنت اعتقال 13 شخصا لتورطهم في التفجيرات الدامية، دون الإدلاء بأي تفاصيل تتعلق بهم أو بخلفياتهم الإيديولوجية.
ومن إجمالي سكان سريلانكا، البالغ عددهم نحو 22 مليونا، 70 بالمئة من البوذيين و12.6 بالمئة من الهندوس و9.7 بالمئة من المسلمين و7.6 بالمئة من المسيحيين، وفقا للتعداد السكاني الذي أجري في البلاد عام 2012.
