Cairo – -.The Egyptian army is conducting joint naval exercises with French military forces in Egyptian territorial waters, an Egyptian army official said Tuesday.
According to a statement issued by Egyptian army spokesman Tamer Rifai, the joint drills are being held in the northern Mediterranean Sea.
Rifai added that the maneuvers were intended to bolster military cooperation between the two participant countries.
The spokesman did not say when the exercises, which remain underway, would wrap up.
According to the army, training activities pertain mainly to maritime security and counter-terrorism.
In February and March, Egypt and France conducted three separate joint naval exercises in the Red Sea and the Mediterranean.
Ever since President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi assumed power in June of 2014, Cairo and Paris have signed a range of arms deals, making France -- alongside the U.S. and Russia -- one of Egypt’s main sources for weapons.
The Egyptian and French naval forces conducted Thursday a drill in the Mediterranean Sea. 
The manoeuvre was carried out while the French frigate Provence and supply ship Marine were transiting the Suez Canal with the participation of an Egyptian frigate. 
The exercise comes as part of the Armed Forces' efforts to boost military cooperation with friendly states. 
The participating troops were trained, among other tasks, on countering threats targeting maritime security, and on protecting cargo ships. 
 According to a statement issued by the official spokesman of the Egyptian armed forces on its official website on Facebook, on Tuesday, "elements of the Egyptian and French naval forces carried out maritime training transiting the northern fleet in the Mediterranean Sea during the crossing of a French frigate to the Suez Canal and the participation of one of the units of the Navy Egyptian ", as part of" the plan of the General Command of the armed forces to strengthen and support military cooperation relations with friendly and sister countries. The training also included "the implementation of an exercise to repel air attacks on a naval formation with the participation of an Egyptian Air Force aircraft. This training aims to unify the operational beliefs and concepts and to transfer and exchange common experiences with the French side to support efforts to maintain maritime security in the Mediterranean."
