President Chad's President Idriss Deby to visit Israel

President Idriss Deby of Chad will meet with Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Sunday, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on the first visit by the head of the African-Muslim country to Israel since the severing of bilateral ties in 1972.
"The visit is focused on security," a source told Reuters, adding that Israel had supplied Chad's army with weapons and equipment this year to help fight rebels in the north.
"This is the first visit by a Chadian president to Israel since the establishment of the state and comes after a lot of diplomatic efforts led by Prime Minister Netanyahu in the last few years," Netanyahu's office said in a statement.
The Netanyahu government is keen to reach out to Africa, where some African countries have been keeping a distance between Israel and Israel since the occupation of Palestinian territories in the 1967 Middle East war.
In July 2016, Deby hosted Chad's Dore Gold, who was director of the Israeli Foreign Ministry, where they held talks on improving bilateral relations.
Gold told Israeli radio on Sunday that his hosts in Chad told him they had cut ties with Israel 44 years ago under pressure from Libya, and that has been the reason since the ouster of Muammar Gaddafi.
