Iran plans to establish a new 'religious' militia

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran has opened the door to followers of other faiths to join a new Basij militia composed of members of religious minorities, a military commander said on Sunday.
"Iran is ready to form a Basij group composed of followers of other religions starting today, to benefit more from the capabilities of followers of other religions," said Reza Yazdi, commander of one of the battalions of the Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Tasnim news agency reported
The Basij is a paramilitary force composed of civilian volunteers, founded in 1979 by order of former spiritual leader Ruhollah Khomeini
"The formation of a core of Basij religions with an Iranian identity may be useful," Yazdi said
The leader of the Revolutionary Guard said that the militia may be "very useful" in protecting sensitive sites and the preservation of state land, and defend the ruling regime
In October, the United States imposed sanctions on the Basij and its affiliates

أعلن قائد عسكري بالحرس الثوري الإيراني الأحد أن طهران فتحت الباب لأتباع الديانات الأخرى للانضمام لميليشيا باسيج جديدة مكونة من أفراد الأقليات الدينية.
وقال رضا يزدي قائد إحدى الكتائب بقوات الحرس الثوري إن "إيران جاهزة لتشكيل فرقة باسيج مكونة من أتباع الديانات الأخرى ابتداء من اليوم، للاستفادة أكثر من قدرات أتباع الديانات الأخرى"، حسبما نقلت وكالة "تسنيم" المقربة من الحرس الثوري.
والباسيج هي قوات شبه عسكرية تتكون من متطوعين من المدنيين، تأسست في 1979 بأمر من مرشد الثورة السابق روح الله الخميني.
وأضاف يزدي: "تشكيل نواة لباسيج أديان بهوية إيرانية قد يكون مفيدا".
وأشار القيادي بالحرس الثوري إلى أن هذه الميليشيا قد تكون "مفيدة جدا" في حماية المواقع الحساسة وحفظ أراضي الدولة، والدفاع عن النظام الحاكم.
يذكر أنه في تشرين الأول/أكتوبر المنصرم، فرضت الولايات المتحدة عقوبات على قوات الباسيج وشركات ومؤسسات تابعة لها.
