China calls for "conservative Islamic approach" to surrender
Authorities in Xinjiang, which has a Muslim majority, have given people who said they "poisoned them with extremism, terrorism, separatism, links to terrorist groups abroad or a conservative Islamic approach to surrender"
"The authorities will deal with those who surrender to judicial bodies within 30 days, confess their crimes and may avoid punishment," the city of Hami, a provincial city, said on Sunday at its official expense on a social media outlet
"We urge all individuals who are invited to follow the Koran in life and to prevent others from watching television, preventing alcohol, smoking and dancing at weddings on the grounds that it is haraam to give themselves up," the publication said
In October, China launched a crackdown on halal products in Xinjiang, home to the Muslim Uighur minority, and justified it by preventing Islam from "infiltrating into secular life and feeding extremism"
The city of Urumqi, capital of the province, published a note on the official website of Wechat, China's most famous website, in which the Communist Party leaders in the city led its cadres to "fight a decisive battle against Halal foods"
Party leaders said they would force government officials and party members to embrace Marxist-Leninist thought and speak Chinese Mandarin in public
China claims Xinjiang is facing a serious threat from Islamist militancy and from separatists who plot to carry out attacks and fuel tensions among Muslim minorities in the region
Last August, a UN human rights committee revealed China's detention of about 1 million Uighurs in a "secret detention camp".
Since early 2018, Chinese officials have imposed a program called "home-stay" for Muslim families in Xinjiang, home to 11 million minority Uighurs and other Turkish minorities, Human Rights Watch said
