Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned that the Hagia Sophia Museum, which was a church, could be converted into a mosque open to worshipers. "The Hagia Sophia will not be mentioned as a museum and we will remember it as a mosque."
Erdogan stressed that the issue of turning the Hagia Sophia into a mosque "a demand that our people and the Islamic world aspire to demand for all, our people yearned to see him as a mosque."
The Turkish president has already said that they are planning after the local elections expected next Sunday, "to restore the Hagia Sophia to its origin, not only make it free, which means it will not become a museum, and will be called a mosque."
"It was a big mistake to turn the name of this place into a museum. It is time to take a step to change this situation, and accordingly Hagia Sophia will not be mentioned as a museum," she said.
"Tourists will come from everywhere to visit the Hagia Sophia, not the Hagia Sophia, and visit the mosques of Sultan Ahmed and Sulaymaniyah in Istanbul," he said.
"Some people come out to ask us not to do so. They do not express a word about what happens in the Al-Aqsa Mosque, where soldiers enter their houses and throw stones on the ground. We are Muslims and such things bother us, so the silent people do not go out to teach us. What we do or do not do. "
The Hagia Sophia came to the fore after the terrorist attack by an extremist Australian in New Zealand that killed 50 worshipers and wounded scores. "It will be freed from its minarets," said terrorist Hagia Sophia in his statement.
The construction of the church of Hagia Sophia dates back to the sixth century AD, but became a mosque in the 15th century after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453.
The church of Hagia Sophia became a museum under the rule of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, and is still controversial between Turkey and Western countries that refuse to convert it into a mosque.

لفت الرئيس التركي رجب طيب أردوغان إلى احتمال تحويل متحف آيا صوفيا الذي كان كنيسة إلى مسجد مفتوح أمام المصلين، مشيرا أنه "لن يتم ذكر آيا صوفيا كمتحف، حيث ستخرج من وضعها هذا، وسنذكرها كمسجد".
وشدد أردوغان على أن مسألة تحويل آيا صوفيا إلى مسجد "مطلب يتطلع إليه شعبنا، والعالم الإسلامي، أي مطلب للجميع، فشعبنا مشتاق منذ سنوات ليراه مسجدًا".
الرئيس التركي سبق أن ذكر أنهم يخططون بعد الانتخابات المحلية المرتقبة الأحد المقبل، "لإعادة آيا صوفيا إلى أصله، وليس جعله مجانيا فقط، وهذا يعني أنه لن يصبح متحفًا، وسيسمى مسجدًا".
وتابع قائلا "لقد كانت مسألة تحويل اسم هذا المكان إلى متحف خطأ كبيرًا، وقد آن الآوان لاتخاذ خطوة لتغيير هذا الوضع، وبناء عليه لن يتم ذكر آيا صوفيا كمتحف، حيث ستخرج من وضعها هذا، وسنذكرها كمسجد".
وأضاف "وسيأتي السياح من كل مكان ليزوروا مسجد آيا صوفيا وليس متحف آيا صوفيا كما يزورون مسجدي السلطان أحمد، والسليمانية بإسطنبول".
واستطرد قائلا "البعض يخرج علينا ليطلب منا ألا نفعل ذلك، وهم لا ينبسون ببنت شفة حيال ما يحدث من اعتداءات تحدث بالمسجد الأقصى حيث يدخله الجنود ببياداتهم، ويلقون بالمصاحف على الأرض، فنحن مسلمون ومثل هذه الأمور تضايقنا، لذلك على الصامتين حيال ذلك ألا يخرجوا ليعلموننا ما نفعل أو لا نفعل".
وعاد موضوع آيا صوفيا إلى الواجهة عقب العملية الإرهابية التي نفذها أسترالي متطرف في نيوزيلندا، والتي أسفرت عن مقتل 50 مصلياً وإصابة العشرات، وذكر الإرهابي آيا صوفيا في بيانه قائلا "إنها  ستحرر من مآذنها".
ويعود تاريخ بناء كنيسة آيا صوفيا إلى القرن السادس الميلادي، لكنها تحولت إلى مسجد في القرن الـ 15 بعد فتح العثمانيين القسطنطينية عام 1453م .
وتحولت كنيسة آيا صوفيا إلى متحف في مرحلة حكم مصطفى كمال أتاتورك، ومازالت إلى الآن مثار جدل بين تركيا والدول الغربية التي ترفض تحويلها إلى مسجد.
