Attackers throw explosive at Russian consulate in Athens
ATHENS (Reuters) - Attackers on a motorcycle threw a hand grenade at the Russian consulate in Athens early on Friday, causing no injuries and slight damage, police said.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the early morning attack on the consulate in the Athens suburb of Chalandri. Police had cordoned off the area.
The device exploded beneath a guard booth in the compound of the consulate but was thought to be low-density explosive.
“The material damage was small and there were no injuries,” a police spokesman told Reuters.
Greece’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it “unreservedly condemned” the attack.
“Our traditional and centuries-old ties of friendship and cooperation with Russia are not going to be affected by such unlawful and utterly condemnable acts,” it said in a statement.
Small-scale attacks on businesses, police, politicians and embassies are frequent in Greece, which has a long history of political violence.
A burnt-out motorcycle found shortly after the incident in the central Athens district of Exarchia was being examined as the possible getaway vehicle of the attackers.
In 2016, a security guard was wounded in a similar incident at the French embassy in central Athens.
“It would be very early to share further evidence. The anti-terrorism unit is now handling the case. We had similar attacks in the past, one particular attack was very similar,” the official said, referring to the attack on the French embassy.

Attack on the Russian Embassy in Greece
The Russian embassy in Greece said Friday it had been subjected to a sabotage attempt on Thursday night after unknown assailants threw a grenade at the embassy building.
The embassy said in a statement: "On Thursday night, unknown persons on a motorcycle threw a grenade at a building belonging to the Russian consulate in Athens and limited damage to materials only."
The embassy explained that "the damage was limited to minor material losses, and the competent Greek authorities to investigate the circumstances of the incident .."
The accident occurred at 3:30 am local time (0600 GMT) on Friday.
The attack occurred around 0200 GMT, and no one claimed responsibility. One or two people on a motorcycle are believed to have thrown the bomb. Police are investigating a possible link to a burnt motorcycle that was later found in central Athens.
In 2017, the Russian embassy in Greece confirmed that the Russian consul in Greece, Andrei Malanin, 55, had been found dead in his home in the Greek capital of Athens.
Greek media reported that the Russian diplomat did not attend his work and did not respond to telephone calls since last Monday. "His colleagues came with his police to his house in the third floor of one of the buildings on the central Irodo Atico street," Novosti quoted Greek media as saying. Athens broke the door lock which was closed by the key from the inside.
The agency confirmed that an investigation is underway on the causes of death, according to Russia today.

اثينا (رويترز) - قالت الشرطة إن مهاجمين على دراجة بخارية ألقوا قنبلة يدوية على القنصلية الروسية في أثينا في وقت مبكر يوم الجمعة ولم يتسببوا في أي إصابات أو أضرار طفيفة.
ولم تعلن أي جهة مسؤوليتها عن الهجوم الذي وقع في الصباح الباكر على القنصلية في ضاحية خالاندري في أثينا. وطوقت الشرطة المنطقة.
وانفجرت العبوة تحت كشك حراسة في مجمع القنصلية لكن يعتقد أنها متفجرة منخفضة الكثافة.
وقال متحدث باسم الشرطة لرويترز "الاضرار المادية كانت صغيرة ولم تقع اصابات."
وقالت وزارة الخارجية اليونانية إنها "أدانت دون تحفظ" الهجوم.
وقالت في بيان "علاقات الصداقة والتعاون التقليدية التي امتدت لقرون مع روسيا لن تتأثر بمثل هذه الاعمال غير القانونية والتي تدينها تماما."

وأوضحت السفارة أن ” الأضرار اقتصرت على خسائر مادية طفيفة، وتقوم الأجهزة اليونانية المختصة بالتحقيق في ملابسات الحادث..”
ووقع الحادث في الساعة الثالثة والنصف فجر اليوم الجمعة، بالتوقيت المحلي.
فقد وقع الهجوم حوالي الساعة 02.00 ت غ، ولم تعلن أي جهة مسؤوليتها عنه. ويعتقد أن شخصاً أو اثنين كانا على دراجة نارية ألقيا القنبلة. وتحقق الشرطة في صلة محتملة بدراجة نارية محترقة عثر عليها في وقت لاحق وسط أثينا.
وفي عام 2017، كانت قد أكدت السفارة الروسية في اليونان، مساء اليوم الإثنين، أنه تم العثور على القنصل الروسي في اليونان “أندريه مالانين”، (55 عاما)، ميتا بمنزله في العاصمة اليونانية أثينا.
ونقلت “نوفوستي” عن وسائل إعلام يونانية قولها إن الدبلوماسي الروسي لم يحضر إلى عمله، ولم يرد على الاتصالات الهاتفية، منذ الإثنين الماضي، مضيفة أن “زملاءه قدموا مع أفراد الشرطة الى بيته في الطاق الثالث في إحد العمارات في شارع “إرودو أتيكو” وسط أثينا وكسروا قفل الباب الذي كان مغلقا بالمفتاح من الداخل.
وأكدت الوكالة أن تحقيقا يجري حاليا حول أسباب الوفاة، بحسب روسيا اليوم.
