Germany to Washington: Don't Even Think About Placing Nuclear Missiles in Europe After INF Withdrawal Tyler Durden

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas warned this week that  the US better not be thinking about stationing its intermediate-range missiles in Germany - or anywhere in Europe, for that matter.  For the last 30 years, the treaty has prohibited stationing intermediate-range arms in Europe. Any push to change that would almost certainly be met with "widespread resistance" in Germany, Maas said, so as to avoid a scenario where Europe is put in the middle of a tug-of-war between Russia and the US.  Germany to Washington: Don't Even Think About Placing Nuclear Missiles in Europe After INF Withdrawal Tyler Durden  Who wants to be a target for Russian medium-range nukes? Not the Germans Washington's decision to drop out of the INF has fueled speculation about the return of a full-blown, Cold-War style nuclear arms race, as Russia has reflexively threatened to build up its tactical defenses along Europe's periphery in the face of what's expected to be a buildup of A...

ODNI releases annual overview of Islamic State and al Qaeda networks BY THOMAS JOSCELYN The Office of Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) released its annual “Worldwide Threat Assessment” today. The written statement accompanied oral testimony given by Director Daniel Coats to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. The ODNI warns that both the Islamic State and al Qaeda maintain global networks that are far from defeated. The map above is the ODNI’s assessment of the areas where the Islamic State, al Qaeda and affiliated groups operate. The Islamic State and al Qaeda remain bitter rivals, often clashing in some of the areas shown. However, both have a significant global footprint. What people in 1900 thought the year 2000 would look like By Ana Swanson

What people in 1900 thought the year 2000 would look like By Ana Swanson There are few things as fascinating as seeing what people in the past dreamed about the future. "France in the Year 2000" is one example. The series of paintings, made by Jean-Marc Côté and other French artists in 1899, 1900, 1901 and 1910, shows artist depictions of what life might look like in the year 2000. The first series of images were printed and enclosed in cigarette and cigar boxes around the time of the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris, according to the Public Domain Review, then later turned into postcards. Lots of their ideas involve mechanized devices, flying, or a combination of the two. Some, strangely, involve people interacting in a very close and personal way with marine life. As Open Culture points out, however, there are no images of space travel. Some of the portraits are fantastic -- swashbucklers riding on giant seahorses, anyone? But others are actually surprisingly accurat...
