About the novel
It is the shocking and famous novel of the Turkish novelist Elif Shafak, which almost caused her to be imprisoned due to the sensitivity of her subject as she was subjected to the massacres of Armenians in Turkey, which led to her prosecution by the Turkish judiciary for insulting Turkish nationalism and history. The charges against her were quickly dropped, but on the other hand, this contributed to the high reading rate of the novel, and the highest reading rate in Turkey compared to other writers.
The novel revolves around a Turkish family called Kazanji and consists of four women: Zulekha, the younger sister with a tattoo salon, the mother of Asia's foundling, and Banu, who recently discovered her talent as an astrologer, a widow and teacher, and a unique disaster-obsessed. The only brother lives in America and his daughter, Armanush, in cooperation with Asia, is discovering great secrets about the family and Turkey's recent history. As the events unfold, it is clear that the bastard is the link between previous generations of Turkish and Armenian families.
The novel recalls the history of the Ottoman Empire and the Armenians from the Ottoman period to 1908 to 1923, the date of Turkey's transformation into a modern secular state, to the Turkish-Armenian conflict of 1951, and to the present.

إنها الرواية الصادمة والشهيرة للروائية التركية إليف شافاق والتي كادت أن تتسبب في دخولها السجن نظراً لحساسية موضوعها إذ تتعرض فيها لمذابح الأرمن في تركيا، مما أدى إلى ملاحقتها من قبل القضاء التركي بتهمة إهانة القومية والتاريخ التركي. سرعان ما تم اسقاط التهم الموجهة إليها، لكن من جهة أخرى ساهم ذلك في ارتفاع نسبة قراءة الرواية فحصدت أعلى نسبة قراءة في تركيا مقارنة بغيرها من روايات الكاتبة.
تدور أحداث الرواية حول عائلة تركية تدعى قزانجي وتتألف من أربع نساء: زليخة، الأخت الأصغر التي تملك صالون للوشم، وهي والدة آسيا اللقيطة، وبانو التي اكتشفت مؤخراً موهبتها كمنجّمة، سيزي الأرملة والمدرّسة، وفريدة المهووسة بالكوارث. أمّا الأخ الوحيد فيعيش في أمريكا وتكتشف ابنته، أرمانوش، بالتعاون مع آسيا، أسراراً كبيرة عن العائلة وعن تاريخ تركيا الحديث. مع توالي الأحداث يتضح أن الفتاة اللقيطة هي حلقة الوصل بين أجيال سابقة بين العائلة التركية وأخرى أرمنية.
تتضمن الرواية استحضاراً لتاريخ الدولة العثمانية والأرمن في الفترة الممتدة من العصر العثماني إلى 1908 إلى 1923، وهو تاريخ تحوّل تركيا إلى دولة علمانية حديثة، إلى الصراع التركي الأرمني عام 1951، وصولاً إلى الوقت الحاضر.
