Not many people know of Tsuruga's role in helping Jewish refugees in the 1940s—not even many Tsurugans! That's why an executive committee in Tsuruga, Japan is putting together the Tsugura International Cultural Festival to educate and empower the people of Tsuruga about their own significant history. Now, they need your help to make it all happen!

Tsuruga is a port city in Japan that has been a tremendous ally for many people in need over the last century. During the 1920s the people of Tsuruga took in Polish orphans and provided them with the secure life they could not have in their home country. Then in the 1940s, Jewish refugees fled Europe and landed in this "Port of Humanity". Thanks to the efforts led by Chiune Sugihara, the "Visas of Life" initiative saved thousands of Jewish people’s lives.
This story is a source of strength and connection between the Jewish people and the Japanese. But many are unaware of this incredible history, both in the Jewish world, and in the Japanese. Thus, the Tsuruga International Culture Festival was born! This festival is intended to provide both the natives as well as visitors from abroad to learn about the cultures they have positively impacted. These countries include Israel, Poland, Lithuania, and the Netherlands!  
The festival will include an Israeli food market, cultural exchange workshops, musical performances, lectures, and guests. These guests include the children of "Sugihara survivors". One of these descendants is Damon Krukowski, a professional musician living in the US. His father was a Jewish refugee saved by the "Visas of Life" initiative led by Chiune Sugihara during the wartime.
