Perhaps it is true: "Literature is the mirror of peoples." Through it, we see the people of any state more comprehensively and clearly.
But for this truth to be true, according to the Eritrean novelist / Ahmed Omar Sheikh, the writer must live the reality of his people, to live the events, and to be an active member of his society, and not just an outsider, or mirror shed from outside or from above.
In an interview conducted by Omar Abdel Razek with the Eritrean poet and novelist / novelist Ahmed Omar Sheikh, in the BBC World program on Arabic radio, in which he highlighted the Eritrean literature and achievement written in Arabic.
Many readers of Arabic may not know that there is an Eritrean literature written / written in Arabic, and this may be due to several reasons including: that the Arab reader is not an avid reader of literature on the one hand, on the other hand, it is a reader and not educated to be familiar with literature and its tributaries and environments Different, and the new one that issues it. In addition, there is a clear intent in the absence of some countries and their literary achievement in the forums at all levels, for reasons that may be primarily political.
Eritrea, as is well known, is a young state, having gained independence from neighboring Ethiopia after a long and bitter struggle in 1993.
After independence, it finds itself tied up in a complex world, fraught with endless conflicts between day and night, which has for the past years struggled for survival and self-assertion of Eritreans in a soil rich in complex conflicts and malicious conspiracies.
That conflict has become an adversary of the literature of the nascent state, especially the Arab side.
Creative literary writing was started by Mr. Mohamed Said Naoud in the seventies of the last century, but the Eritrean Arabic literature did not start his journey from the inside only with the writer / Ahmed Omar Sheikh.
Ahmed Omar Sheikh is an Eritrean writer, poet and novelist who has enriched Arab-Eritrean literature with a lot of creative works in poetry and novel, in addition to being a prominent journalist, radio and television, and a revolutionary fighter.
The writer has excelled in writing poetry and revolutionary and lyrical poetry, as the great Sudanese artist / Mohamed Wardi sang one of his poems.

His literary works include Sails, Nurai, Rain and Sorrows, the last of his fiction published in 2015.

ربما يصح القول :" أن الأدب مرآة الشعوب " . إذ من خلاله نرى شعب أي دولة بصورة أكثر شمولاً ووضوحاً .
ولكن لكي تتحقق صدق هذه المقولة ، وفقاً لرأي الروائي الإرتيري/ أحمد عمر شيخ ، يجب أن يعيش الكاتب واقع شعبه ، أن يعايش الأحداث ، وأن يكون عضواً فاعلاً في مجتمعه ، وليس مجرد دخيلاً ، أو مرآة تسلط من الخارج أو من الأعلى .
في المقابلة التي أجراه عمر عبدالرازق مع الأديب ، الشاعر والروائي الإرتيري/ أحمد عمر شيخ ، في برنامج عالم الكتب على إذاعة بي بي سي عربي ، والذي من خلاله تم تسليط الضوء على الأدب والمنجز الإرتيري المكتوب باللغة العربية. 
قد لا يعرف الكثير من قراء العربية ، بأن هناك أدب إرتيري مكتوب/يكتب باللغة العربية ، وقد يرجع ذلك إلى عدة أسباب منها : أن القارئ العربي ليس قارئاً نهماً للأدب من جهة ، ومن جهة أخرى ، فهو قارئ وليس مثقفاً حتى يكون ملمَّاً بالأدب وروافده وبيئاته المختلفة ، والجديد الذي يصدر منه . إضافة إلى أن هناك تعمداً واضحاً في تغييب بعض الدول ومنجزها الأدبي في المحافل على كافة الأصعدة  ، لأسباب قد تكون في المقام الأول سياسية. 
إرتيريا كما هو معلوم دولة فتية ، إذ نالت إستقلالها من الجارة أثيوبيا بعد رحلة نضالية طويلة ومريرة في العام ١٩٩٣م .
لتجد بعد الإستقلال نفسها مكبلة ومحصورة وسط عالم معقد ومشحون بالصراعات التي لا تنتهي بين يوم وليلة ، الأمر الذي جعلها طيلة السنين الفائتة تصارع من أجل البقاء وتأكيد الذات الإرتيرية في تربة غنية بالصراعات المعقدة والمؤمرات الخبيثة .
وذاك الصراع غدا خصماً من أدب الدولة الوليدة ، وخاصة الجانب العربي منه .
وقد بدأت الكتابة الأدبية الإبداعية على يد الأستاذ/ محمد سعيد ناود في سبعينات القرن الماضي ، إلا أن الأدب العربي الإرتيري لم يبدأ رحلته من الداخل إلا مع الكاتب/ أحمد عمر شيخ. 
أحمد عمر شيخ هو كاتب ، شاعر وروائي إرتيري ، قد أغنى الأدب العربي الإرتيري بالكثير من الأعمال الإبداعية في الشعر والرواية ، بالإضافة إلى كونه صحفي وإذاعي وتلفزيوني مرموق ، ومناضل ثوري أيضاً .
وقد برع الكاتب ، في كتابة الشعر والشعر الثوري والغنائي ، إذ قد تغنى الفنان السوداني الكبير/ محمد وردي بأحدى قصائده .
ومن أبهى وأعمق قصائده الثورية :
نشيد المعركة :
على امتدادِ اللحظة التاريخ ينهمرُ الزنادْ
عل الخدودِ العاشقاتِ السمّْر ملحمةُ البلادْ
فوق أجنحة التُّراب المستديمْ
ياسِفْرنا الآتي هو الجسّْرُ القديمْ
مِنْ خطوةِ الشَّعبِ الإلهي
المُعمَّدِ بالعذاباتِ الحرونْ
ياشهقة الإكليل والصَّبر المؤازر بالعِنادْ

نتوسدُ الأنفاقْ
هذا المجد نتلوهُ على زندِ الكلاشْ
عرائشُ الأملِ المقيمْ
والاماسي المُدلهِمَّه
إنها أحلامُ أُمَّه
فمَنْ للجنّْدِ ياأمَّاهُ ؟!
هل كفُّ السَّديمْ ؟!

ومن أعماله الأدبية في الرواية : الأشرعة ، نوراي ، أحزان المطر والهش ، وهي آخر أعماله الروائية والتي صدرت في العام ٢٠١٥م .
