Social Sciences in the Arab World: Approaches to Arabic Production (2000-2016

Summary: This second report of the Arab Observatory for Social Sciences contains an approach to the Arabic-language literature on social sciences in the Arab world, based on data reflecting the reality of this science and the development of production in its fields. And left the material presented to the study of books and articles published in the periodicals, where the number of books studied in quantity and quality of 1480 books, and 383 books; 366 articles.

The report is divided into four sections, the first of which is the reality of sociology in the Maghreb countries and then in the Mashreq countries, followed by Egypt in an independent section. The second chapter deals with the reality of anthropology in Maghreb countries first and then in the Mashreq countries. The third chapter deals with social psychology; the fourth and final chapter deals with the reality of social sciences through the periodicals, which, in addition to the three mentioned sciences, encompassed other sciences (political science, economics, and history).

The report is based on a set of background papers in various sciences and delves into the conceptualization of a number of concepts, clusters and taims. Given the enormity of the material and the nature of the research in the contents, the work was limited to relatively small samples of books and articles during the time period between 2000-2016, Three periods: 2000 - 2005, 2006 - 2010, 2011 - 2016.

The report ends with a summary of the conclusions, despite the positive factors that drive the production in the social sciences, the literature suffers from many obstacles, including the composition and scientific experience, including related to the conditions of the region and its institutions.

The report also concludes that the need to change the image of social sciences in the decision-making circles and in society at large.

An overview of the author of the report

Dr. Abdullah Hamoudi is Professor of Anthropology at Princeton University since 1990. He is the Founding Director of the Institute for Transnational Studies of the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia at the University itself. Before moving to Princeton, he was a professor at Mohammed V University in Rabat, Morocco. Dr. Hamoudi wrote several of them, "The Victim and Its Masks", "Master and Disciple" and "Season in Mecca" A season in Mecca. His writings have been translated into a large number of languages, including Arabic, French, English, German, Italian and Russian, and won the LETRA International Award. He has also edited several books in Arabic, French and English. Throughout his career, Dr. Hammoudi has received numerous awards and fellowships, including the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study, the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin and the Rajni Kuthari Chair for Democracy at the Center for the Study of Developing Communities in New Delhi.

العلوم الاجتماعية في العالم العربي: مقاربة الإنتاجات الصادرة باللّغة العربيّة (2000-2016)

ملخص: يحتضنُ هذا التقرير الثاني للمرصد العربي للعلوم الاجتماعية مقاربةً للإنتاجات الصادرة باللغة العربيّة حول العلوم الاجتماعيّة في العالم العربي، استنادًا إلى جملة معطيات تعكس واقع هذه العلوم وتطوّر الإنتاج في مجالاتها. وتركنُ المواد المعروضة إلى دراسة الكتب والمقالات المنشورة في الدوريات، حيث بلغ عدد الكتب المدروسة كمًّا وكيفًا 1480 كتابًا، وكيفًا 383 كتابًا؛ أما المقالات فلامس عددها 366 مقالًا.

يتوزّع التقرير على أربعة أقسام يقارب الأول منها واقع علم الاجتماع في البلدان المغاربية ثم بلدان المشرق، تليها مصر في قسم مستقلّ؛ ويعالج الفصل الثاني واقع الأنثروبولوجيا في البلدان المغاربية أولًا،ثم في بلدان المشرق. فيما يحيط الفصل الثالث بعلم النفس الإجتماعي؛ أما الفصل الرابع والأخير فخُصِّص لواقع العلوم الاجتماعية من خلال الدوريات والتي أحاطت، إضافةً إلى العلوم الثلاثة المذكورة، بالعلوم الأخرى (علم السياسة، وعلم الاقتصاد، والتاريخ).

يستند التقرير إلى مجموعة ورقاتٍ خلفيّة في مختلف العلوم، ويغوص في استبناط جملة من المفاهيم والعناقيد والتيمات.ونظرًا إلى ضخامة المادة وطبيعة البحث في المحتويات، اقتصر العمل على عيناتٍ صغيرة نسبيًّا من الكتب والمقالات في خلال المرحلة الزمنية الواقعة بين عامَي 2000–2016 والتي قُسِّمَت إلى فتراتٍ ثلاث: 2000 – 2005، 2006 – 2010، 2011 – 2016.

ويُختتم التقرير بجملة خلاصات إذ ورغم الإيجابيات التي تدفع بالإنتاج في العلوم الاجتماعية قدمًا، تعاني الكتابات في هذه العلوم من معوقات عدة، منها ما يرجع إلى التكوين والتمرُّس العلمي، ومنها ما يتّصل بظروف المنطقة ومؤسساتها.

كما يخلص التقرير في معرض التوصيات إلى ضرورة تغيير صورة العلوم الاجتماعية في دوائر القرار وفي المجتمع بصفة عامة.

لمحة عن مؤلف التقرير

الدكتور عبد الله حمّودي أستاذ الأنثروبولوجيا في جامعة برينستون منذ العام 1990. وهو المدير المؤسس لمعهد الدراسات عبر الإقليمية للشرق الأوسط المعاصر وشمال أفريقيا وآسيا الوسطى في الجامعة نفسها. قبل انتقاله إلى جامعة برينستون، كان أستاذًا في جامعة محمد الخامس في الرباط في المغرب.  للدكتور حمودي كتب عدة  منها “الضحية وأقنعتها” The Victim and its Masks، “الشيخ والمريد” Master and Disciple، و”موسم في مكّة” A season in Mecca. وتُرجمت كتاباته إلى عدد كبير من اللغات منها العربية والفرنسية والإنجليزية والألمانية والإيطالية والروسية، وحاز جائزة ليترا إنترناشيونال. كما حرّر كتبًا عدة باللغات العربية والفرنسية والإنجليزية. تلقّى الدكتور حمّودي طوال مسيرته المهنية العديد من الجوائز والزمالات، بما في ذلك: معهد الدراسات المتقدمة في برينستون، ومعهد الدراسات المتقدّمة في برلين، وكرسي راجني كوثري للديمقراطية في مركز دراسة المجتمعات النامية في نيودلهي.
