Congress presses Saudi Arabia to immediately release activists

Lawmakers from the Democratic and Republican parties submitted a draft resolution Wednesday to Congress demanding that Saudi Arabia release women activists in prisons and human rights defenders "immediately and unconditionally."
The new project is completely different from the project aimed at cutting off US support for the Saudi-led military alliance in Yemen and the responsibility of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for the assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, the Washington Post reported.
According to the newspaper, the new draft resolution focuses on the plight of women human rights defenders, particularly with regard to the report that at least 10 women were subjected to severe abuse during detention.
The bill calls on the US government to continue to publicly and privately demand the release of women and individuals arrested as part of a campaign that escalated following the arrival of Bin Salman in mid-2017.
Since the rise of Mohammed bin Salman, the kingdom's authorities launched a campaign of arrests of 17 prominent activists and activists in the field of women's rights, especially women activists to grant women the right to drive and end the guardianship of men.
Saudi authorities accused the activists of "harming the kingdom's supreme interests and providing financial and moral support to hostile elements abroad," while pro-government media accused them of being "traitors" and "agents of the embassies."
Among the detained women activists were Jain al-Hathloul, Iman al-Nafjan and Azizah al-Yousef, who were known for defending women's right to drive.
In addition to the activists, over the past two years, Saudi Arabia has witnessed a large wave of arrests, intensified after bin Salman, and targeted scientists, princes, officials and former ministers, as well as the arrest of opposition activists.

الكونغرس يضغط على السعودية لإطلاق سراح الناشطات فوراً

قدّم مشرّعون من الحزبين الديمقراطي والجمهوري الأمريكي مشروع قرار، اليوم الأربعاء، إلى الكونغرس؛ يطالب السعودية بالإفراج عن الناشطات المعتقلات في السجون، والمدافعات عن حقوق الإنسان "فوراً وبلا شروط".
وذكرت صحيفة "واشنطن بوست" الأمريكية، أن المشروع الجديد يختلف تماماً عن المشروع الذي يهدف إلى قطع الدعم الأمريكي عن التحالف العسكري الذي تقوده السعودية في اليمن، ومسؤولية ولي العهد، محمد بن سلمان، عن اغتيال الصحفي جمال خاشقجي.
ووفق الصحيفة، فإن مشروع القرار الجديد يركّز على محنة النساء المدافعات عن حقوق الإنسان، ولا سيما فيما يتعلق بالحديث عن تعرّض ما لا يقل عن 10 من النساء للإيذاء الشديد أثناء الاحتجاز.
ويدعو المشروع الحكومة الأمريكية إلى الاستمرار في المطالبة علناً وسراً بالإفراج عن النساء والأفراد الذين اعتُقلوا ضمن حملة تصاعدت عقب وصول بن سلمان إلى منصب ولي العهد، منتصف 2017.
ومنذ صعود محمد بن سلمان، شنّت سلطات المملكة حملة اعتقالات طالت 17 ناشطاً وناشطة بارزين في مجال حقوق المرأة، خصوصاً نساء نشطن لمنح المرأة حق قيادة السيارة وإنهاء وصاية الرجل عليها.
واتهمت السلطات السعودية النشطاء بـ"الإضرار بمصالح المملكة العليا، وتقديم الدعم المالي والمعنوي لعناصر معادية بالخارج"، في حين اتهمتهم وسائل إعلام موالية للحكومة بأنهم "خونة" و"عملاء للسفارات".
وبين الناشطات المعتقلات؛ لُجين الهذلول، وإيمان النفجان، وعزيزة اليوسف، اللواتي عُرفن بدفاعهن عن حق النساء في قيادة السيارة.
وبالإضافة إلى الناشطات، وعلى مدار عامين تقريباً، شهدت السعودية حملة اعتقالات واسعة، زادت حدّتها عقب تولّي بن سلمان، واستهدفت علماء وأمراء ومسؤولين ووزراء سابقين، فضلاً عن اعتقال نشطاء معارضين.
