The UN Security Council on Saturday approved a 30-day cease-fire in Syria.The text, which has been amended several times, "calls on all parties to cease hostilities as soon as possible for at least 30 consecutive days in Syria for a permanent humanitarian truce" in order to "allow for the regular delivery of humanitarian assistance and medical evacuation of patients and severely injured."
Russia backed the resolution after a series of last-minute negotiations.
United States delegate to the United Nations, Nikke Hailey, said on the day of the vote that Washington wants to apply the cease-fire throughout Syria and demanded pressure on President Bashar al-Assad's regime to abide by the truce immediately.
The US envoy criticized Russia's position, which delayed the decision.

The UN Security Council on Friday postponed a vote on a draft cease-fire in Syria to Saturday after its members failed to reach an agreement.
Sweden's ambassador to the United Nations Olof Skog told reporters the council was unable to "completely bridge the gap."
Negotiations stalled because of Russia's demand that militant groups fighting President Bashar al-Assad abide by the truce, AFP said.
US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikke Hailey criticized the Russian position, and wrote in a tweet: "It is unreasonable to disable Russia's vote on a ceasefire that allows for the introduction of humanitarian aid in Syria."
"How many people will die before the Security Council approves the vote? Let's do it tonight, the Syrian people can not wait," she said.

The Security Council is scheduled to vote Friday on a draft resolution drafted by Kuwait and Sweden calling for a 30-day humanitarian truce in Syria.
Russia's position on the draft, which demanded amendments, was not yet known and said its wording in its current form was unrealistic.
These developments come after the failure of the members of the Security Council to reach an agreement.
The draft resolution needs nine votes to pass, provided that none of the five permanent members of the Council uses the veto.
The eastern Gouta, the last stronghold of the opposition besieged near Damascus, is under constant bombardment by the Syrian regime, which in the past five days has killed at least 420 people and hundreds of wounded, prompting widespread international condemnation.

وافق مجلس الأمن الدولي السبت على مشروع قرار لوقف إطلاق النار في سورية لمدة 30 يوما.
ويطالب النص الذي عُدل عدة مرات "كل الأطراف بوقف الأعمال الحربية في أسرع وقت لمدة 30 يوما متتالية على الأقل في سورية من أجل هدنة إنسانية دائمة" بهدف "إفساح المجال أمام إيصال المساعدات الإنسانية بشكل منتظم وإجلاء طبي للمرضى والمصابين بجروح بالغة".
وأيدت روسيا القرار بعد سلسلة مفاوضات في اللحظة الأخيرة.
مندوبة الولايات المتحدة في الأمم المتحدة، نيكي هايلي، قالت بعيد التصويت إن واشنطن تريد تطبيق وقف إطلاق النار في جميع أنحاء سورية وطالبت بالضغط على نظام الرئيس بشار الأسد للتقيد بالهدنة فورا.
وانتقدت المندوبة الأميركية موقف روسيا الذي تسبب في تأخير صدور القرار.

أرجأ مجلس الأمن الدولي الجمعة التصويت على مشروع قرار لوقف إطلاق النار في سورية إلى يوم السبت بعد إخفاق أعضائه في التوصل إلى اتفاق.
وقال سفير السويد لدى الأمم المتحدة أولوف سكوغ للصحافيين إن المجلس لم يتمكن من "سد الفجوة بشكل كامل".
وقالت وكالة الصحافة الفرنسية إن المفاوضات تعثرت بسبب مطالبة روسيا بأن تلتزم الجماعات المسلحة التي تقاتل الرئيس بشار الأسد بالهدنة.
وانتقدت السفيرة الأميركية لدى الأمم المتحدة نيكي هايلي الموقف الروسي، وكتبت في تغريدة: "من غير المعقول تعطيل روسيا التصويت على وقف لإطلاق النار يسمح بإدخال مساعدات إنسانية في سورية".
وتابعت "كم عدد الأشخاص الذين سيموتون قبل أن يوافق مجلس الأمن على التصويت؟ لنقم بذلك الليلة. الشعب السوري لا يستطيع الانتظار":

من المقرر أن يصوت مجلس الأمن الجمعة على مشروع قرار صاغته الكويت والسويد يطالب بهدنة إنسانية لمدة 30 يوما في سورية.
ولم يعرف بعد موقف روسيا من المشروع الذي طالبت إدخال تعديلات عليه، وقالت إن صياغته بشكله الحالي غير واقعية.
وتأتي هذه التطورات غداة فشل الدول الأعضاء في مجلس الأمن في التوصل إلى اتفاق.
ويحتاج مشروع القرار إلى تسعة أصوات لتمريره، شريطة ألا تستخدم أي من الدول الخمس دائمة العضوية في المجلس، حق النقض.
وتتعرض الغوطة الشرقية آخر معاقل المعارضة المحاصرة قرب دمشق إلى قصف متواصل من النظام السوري أسفر في الأيام الخمسة الماضية عن سقوط ما لا يقل عن 420 قتيلا فضلا عن مئات الجرحى ما أثار تنديدات دولية واسعة.
