Washington denies Russian allegations about a preacher in Afghanistan

The commander of US forces in Afghanistan, General John Nicholson on Saturday denied Russian allegations that the number of armed militants calling in this country is estimated at thousands, and called on both Moscow and Tehran to support the Afghan government and not the Taliban to help defeat the militant organization there.

He said during a press conference in the capital Kabul that Russian figures are "very exaggerated" and estimated the number of armed supporters in Afghanistan about 1500.

"We have reduced their numbers by half in the last two years, we killed their princes, we have reduced the area of ​​land they occupy ... and we have expelled their fighters from some parts of the country."

He said that a supporter in Afghanistan was receiving support and guidance from Iraq and Syria, but this assistance has diminished with the victories of the coalition in these countries.

"We have not seen an exodus of foreign fighters from Syria and Iraq into Afghanistan," he said.

The Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has claimed that there are thousands of armed supporters in the northern and eastern regions of Afghanistan, and that the gunmen fleeing from Syria and Iraq join them, as well as Iranian and Pakistani officials expressed their concern about the "spread of a cheerleader" there.

وقال إن داعش في أفغانستان كان يتلقى الدعم والتوجيه من العراق وسورية، لكن هذه المساعدة تضاءلت مع انتصارات التحالف في هذين البلدين.

وأشار إلى وجود مقاتلين أجانب في صفوف التنظيم في أفغانستان لكن "عددهم قليل جدا" وقال: "إننا لم نشهد هجرة لمقاتلين أجانب من سورية والعراق إلى أفغانستان".

وكان وزير الخارجية الروسي سيرغي لافروف قد زعم أن هناك الآلاف من مسلحي داعش في المناطق الشمالية والشرقية من أفغانستان، وأن مسلحين فارين من سورية والعراق ينضمون إليهم، وكذلك أعرب مسؤولون إيرانيون وباكستانيون عن انزعاجهم من "انتشار داعش" هناك.
