The Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem closed its doors to protest against tax measures imposed by Israel and a bill on property affecting the property of Christian churches.

Patriarchs and heads of the Jerusalem churches announced the closure of the church, which was erected at the site of the burial of the body of Christ, from Sunday until further notice.

Patriarch Theophilos III, the Patriarch of Jerusalem and the rest of Palestine and Jordan, declared this unprecedented protest during a press conference in Jerusalem on behalf of all Patriarchs and heads of the Jerusalem Churches.

The churches rejected a bill being considered by the Israeli government's legislation committee to impose taxes on the property of Christian churches.

The bill would be a breach of previous agreements exempting these property from the municipal tax, and churches fear that the costs of this tax will increase financial pressure on them.

"As a protest, we decided to take this unprecedented step by closing the Church of the Holy Sepulcher," the leaders of the Roman Catholic, Armenian and Armenian churches said in a statement.

They added that the recent Israeli actions appeared to be "an attempt to weaken the Christian presence" in Jerusalem. They accused Israel of launching an "unprecedented attack on Christians in the Holy Land."

Christian leaders expressed anger at the attempts by the Israeli authorities in Jerusalem to collect taxes on the property of the Church, which it considers commercial, justifying its decision that the exemptions apply only to places of worship or religious education.

Religious leaders fear legislation enacted by the Israeli government will allow confiscation of church property.

"This hateful bill could make progress during a meeting of the ministerial committee and if approved, it would make possible the confiscation of church property."

"This reminds us all of similar laws against Jews during a dark period in Europe," the statement said.

Disappointment
Tourists were puzzled by the closed doors of the church after the announcement, as guides sought to explain why the church could not be visited.

Nir Barakat, mayor of Jerusalem, said in a statement that the measure would make the taxes collected on church property about 650 million shekels (186 million dollars), calling it "illegal and irrational."

Barakat stressed that the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and all other churches are tax-free and will remain, and change will apply only to such establishments as "hotels, halls and companies" owned by churches.

Christian leaders said the measure threatened their ability to carry out their work, which includes not only religious services but also social services for those in need.

A Russian tourist described her inability to visit the church on Sunday as "a great disappointment."

"It is one of the purposes of religious attraction, and for us it is very important because it is the first time we visit the place," she said.

أغلقت كنيسة القيامة في القدس أبوابها احتجاجا على إجراءات ضريبية فرضتها إسرائيل ومشروع قانون حول الملكية يطال أملاك الكنائس المسيحية.

وأعلن بطاركة ورؤساء كنائس القدس إغلاق الكنيسة، التي شيدت في موقع دفن جسد المسيح، بدءا من اليوم الأحد وحتى إشعار آخر.

وأعلن البطريرك ثيوفيلوس الثالث، بطريرك القدس وسائر أعمال فلسطين و الأردن، هذا الإجراء الاحتجاجي غير مسبوق، خلال مؤتمر صحفي في القدس، باسم جميع بطاركة و رؤوساء كنائس القدس، مشيرا أنه جاء احتجاجاً على الممارسات الإسرائيلية بحق الكنائس حسب قوله.

ورفضت الكنائس مشروع قانون تدرسه لجنة التشريعات في الحكومة الإسرائيلية يقضي بفرض ضرائب على أملاك الكنائس المسيحية.

يذكر أن مشروع القانون سيعد خرقا لاتفاقات سابقة تعفي هذه الأملاك من ضريبة البلدية، وتخشى الكنائس أن تؤدي تكاليف هذه الضريبة إلى زيادة الضغوط المالية عليها.

وقال زعماء كنائس الروم الكاثوليك والروم الأرثوذكس والأرمن في بيان "كإجراء احتجاجي، قررنا اتخاذ هذه الخطوة غير المسبوقة بإغلاق كنيسة القيامة".



أبواب كنيسة القيامة مغلقة

وأضافوا أن الإجراءات الإسرائيلية الأخيرة تبدو "محاولة لإضعاف الوجود المسيحي" في القدس. واتهموا إسرائيل بشن هجوم "ممنهج لم يسبق له مثيل على المسيحيين في الأرض المقدسة".

وأعرب القادة المسيحيون عن غضبهم إزاء محاولات السلطات الإسرائيلية في القدس تحصيل ضرائب على أملاك الكنيسة التي تعتبرها تجارية، مبررة قرارها بأن الإعفاءات لا تنطبق سوى على أماكن العبادة أو التعليم الديني.

ويخشى الزعماء الدينيون من أن التشريع الذي تدرسه الحكومة الإسرائيلية سيسمح بمصادرة ممتلكات الكنيسة.

وتابع البيان :"مشروع القانون البغيض هذا قد يحرز تقدما خلال اجتماع للجنة الوزارية وإذا ووفق عليه فسيجعل مصادرة ممتلكات الكنائس ممكنة".

وأضاف البيان :"يذكرنا هذا جميعا بقوانين مماثلة اتخذت ضد اليهود خلال فترة مظلمة في أوروبا".

خيبة أمل
ووقف سائحون في حيرة أمام أبواب الكنيسة المغلقة بعد الإعلان، في الوقت الذي سعى فيه مرشدون إلى شرح أسباب عدم إمكانية زيارة الكنيسة.

وقال نير بركات، رئيس بلدية القدس، في بيان إن هذا الأجراء يجعل الضرائب غير المحصلة على ممتلكات الكنائس نحو 650 مليون شيكل (186 مليون دولار)، واصفا إياه بأنه "غير قانوني وغير عقلاني".

وشدد بركات على أن كنيسة القيامة وجميع الكنائس الأخرى معفاة من الضرائب وستظل، وسوف يطبق التغير فقط على منشآت مثل "الفنادق والصالات والشركات" التي تمتلكها الكنائس.

وقال قادة مسيحيون إن الإجراء يهدد قدرتهم على ممارسة عملهم، الذي لا يشمل الخدمات الدينية فحسب، بل الخدمات الاجتماعية للمحتاجين.

ووصفت سائحة روسية عدم قدرتها على زيارة الكنيسة يوم الأحد بأنها "خيبة أمل كبيرة".

وقالت :"إنها واحدة من مقاصد الجذب الدينية، وهي بالنسبة لنا بالغة الأهمية لأنها المرة الأولى التي نزور فيها المكان".
