LONDON (Reuters) - A Saudi human rights group in London has confirmed a Saudi jail sentence for Twitter and published a letter calling on Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to reform.
A Saudi court on Wednesday sentenced six-year-old human rights activist Issa al-Nakhifi to six years in jail for comments criticizing the government, the group said.
The local newspaper Okaz reported in a report that the criminal court punished an unnamed citizen with six years' imprisonment for attempting to incite public opinion against the state by spreading it to his account in a series of tweets including insulting the state, challenging some of its sovereign decisions, In cases of terrorism and national security ".
She added that the court also ordered him to "write, participate in social networking sites or via the Internet ... and prevent him from traveling outside the Kingdom" for six years as well.
On Tuesday, the organization "Al-Qusayn for Human Rights" published a letter sent by Nakhifi from his prison to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
"I was very pleased and listened to your speeches and press conferences in which you call for freedom of expression and respect for human rights, and this is what we call for and embrace with you to achieve it," the letter said.
Amnesty International demanded his immediate release. "Instead of talking to activists about reforms, the authorities are chasing them one after the other, so almost all Saudi human rights activists either shut their voices or put them in jail," said Dana Ahmed, Saudi campaign manager for the organization.

وقالت منظمة "القسط لدعم حقوق الإنسان" إن محكمة سعودية أصدرت حكما الأربعاء بالسجن ست سنوات على الناشط الحقوقي عيسى النخيفي بسبب تغريدات انتقد فيها الحكومة.
وكانت صحيفة عكاظ المحلية قد ذكرت في تقرير أن المحكمة الجزائية عاقبت مواطنا، لم تذكر اسمه، بالسجن ست سنوات "لسعيه في تأليب الرأي العام ضد الدولة، بنشره على حسابه في توتير تغريدات تتضمن سب الدولة، والطعن في بعض قراراتها السيادية، ومناصرة بعض الموقوفين والمدانين في قضايا الإرهاب والأمن الوطني".
وأضافت أن المحكمة أمرت أيضا بمنعه من "الكتابة أو المشاركة في مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي أو عبر الشبكة المعلوماتية... ومنعه من السفر خارج المملكة" لست سنوات أيضا.
ونشرت منظمة "القسط لدعم حقوق الإنسان" الثلاثاء رسالة وجهها النخيفي من محبسه إلى ولي العهد السعودي محمد بن سلمان.
وجاء في الرسالة "كنت مسرورا جدا وأنا أستمع لخطاباتكم ولقاءاتكم الصحافية التي تدعون فيها لحرية التعبير واحترام حقوق الإنسان وهذا هو ما ندعو له ونلتحم معكم لتحقيقه... أكتبها لكم من داخل معتقلي وقد اعتقلت بسبب المطالبة بها".
وطالبت منظمة العفو الدولية بإطلاق سراحه على الفور. وقالت دانا أحمد، مديرة الحملات الخاصة بالسعودية بالمنظمة: "بدلا من الحوار مع النشطاء بشأن الإصلاحات، تقوم السلطات بملاحقتهم واحدا تلو الآخر، ليكون كل نشطاء حقوق الإنسان السعوديين تقريبا إما أُسكتت أصواتهم أو زج بهم في السجن".
