Doctors at a hospital in the Indian city of Mumbai have removed a 1.87-kilogram brain tumor from a 31-year-old man who said they were the largest tumor in the world.
The seven-hour operation took place on February 14 at Nair Hospital.
Doctors told German news agency DPA on Thursday that the operation had been announced after the hospital confirmed its success after the patient recovered.
"The tumor was very large, it looked like another head above the patient's head," Surikan Balasopramanimam, who was part of the doctors' team, said by telephone from Mumbai.
"Surgery was a challenge because of the size of the tumor, as well as the presence of large arteries inside the tumor," he said.
"We have looked at records that the world's largest brain tumor previously weighed 1.4 kg and was also eradicated in Mumbai," he said.
The tumor causes a loss of vision, as well as anemia. Doctors said he would gradually regain his sight and health.
Pal, a vendor in a department store, was injured in the tumor three years ago. Three hospitals refused to receive him after she said surgery could not be performed to remove the tumor.

وقال كبير الجراحين سريكانث بالاسوبرامانيمام، الذي كان جزءا من فريق الأطباء، هاتفيا من مومباي" الورم كان كبيرا للغاية، بدا أنه مثل رأس أخرى فوق رأس المريض".
وأضاف " الجراحة كانت تمثل تحديا بسبب حجم الورم، بالإضافة لوجود شرايين كبيرة داخل الورم".
وأوضح " لقد تفحصنا السجلات التي أفادت بأن أكبر ورم في المخ في العالم في السابق كان يزن 1.4 كيلوجرام، وتم استئصاله أيضا في مومباي".
وتسبب الورم في فقدان بال لنظره بالإضافة لإصابته بفقر الدم. وقال الأطباء إنه سوف يستعيد نظره وصحته تدريجيا.
أصيب بال، البائع في أحد المتاجر، بالورم منذ ثلاثة أعوام. ورفض ثلاث مستشفيات استقباله بعدما قالت إنه يتعذر إجراء جراحة لإزالة الورم.
