The United States recalls its ambassador from South Sudan
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Monday summoned its ambassador to South Sudan, Thomas Hoshik, to consult and reassess relations over the failure of Juba parties to form a unity government.
The US State Department said in a statement that it had summoned the "US ambassador to South Sudan for consultations on the recent failure of the parties to form a transitional government of national unity by the November 12 deadline."
"While in Washington, Ambassador Hshek will meet with senior US government officials as part of a reassessment of the US relationship with the Government of Southern Sudan in the light of recent developments," it added.
“The United States stands with the people of South Sudan in their quest for peace, and will work in partnership with the region to support efforts to achieve peace and a successful political transition in South Sudan.”
"We summoned our ambassador to South Sudan for consultations, while reassessing our relationship with the Government of Southern Sudan," the statement reiterated in a tweet by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
"We will work with the region to support efforts to achieve peace and a successful political transition in South Sudan."
In September 2018, southern Sudan parties signed the final peace agreement in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in the presence of IGAD heads of state.
The agreement was signed by South Sudan's President Salva Kiir Mayardit, armed opposition leader Riek Machar, as well as representatives of other opposition factions.
South Sudan, which seceded from Sudan through a referendum in 2011, is suffering from a civil war since late 2013, which took a tribal dimension, leaving about 10,000 dead and hundreds of thousands displaced.

واشنطن: أعلنت الولايات المتحدة، الإثنين، استدعاء سفيرها لدى دولة جنوب السودان، توماس هوشيك، للتشاور وإعادة تقييم العلاقات، على خلفية إخفاق فرقاء جوبا في تشكيل حكومة وحدة وطنية.
وقالت الخارجية الأمريكية في بيان، إنها استدعت “السفير الأمريكي في جنوب السودان، لإجراء مشاورات تتعلق بالفشل الأخير للأطراف في تشكيل الحكومة الانتقالية للوحدة الوطنية بحلول الموعد النهائي المحدد في 12 نوفمبر/ تشرين الثاني”.
وأضاف البيان أن “السفير هشيك سيلتقي أثناء تواجده في واشنطن، مع كبار المسؤولين الحكوميين الأمريكيين، كجزء من إعادة تقييم العلاقة الأمريكية مع حكومة جنوب السودان، في ضوء التطورات الأخيرة”.
وتابع: “تقف الولايات المتحدة إلى جانب شعب جنوب السودان في سعيه لتحقيق السلام، وستعمل في إطار شراكة مع المنطقة لدعم الجهود المبذولة لتحقيق السلام والانتقال السياسي الناجح في جنوب السودان”.
وتكرر مضمون البيان، في تغريدة لوزير الخارجية، مايك بومبيو، قال فيها: “استدعينا سفيرنا إلى جنوب السودان للتشاور، بينما نعيد تقييم علاقتنا مع حكومة جنوب السودان”.
وأضاف: “سنعمل مع المنطقة لدعم الجهود المبذولة لتحقيق السلام والانتقال السياسي الناجح في جنوب السودان”.
وفي سبتمبر/ أيلول 2018، وقع فرقاء جنوب السودان اتفاق السلام النهائي بالعاصمة الإثيوبية أديس أبابا، بحضور رؤساء دول “إيغاد”.
ووقع وقتها على الاتفاق، كل من رئيس دولة جنوب السودان سلفاكير ميارديت، وزعيم المعارضة المسلحة ريك مشار، بالإضافة إلى ممثلي فصائل المعارضة الأخرى.

وتعاني جنوب السودان، التي انفصلت عن السودان عبر استفتاء شعبي عام 2011، من حرب أهلية منذ أواخر 2013، اتخذت بعدًا قبليًا، وخلفت نحو 10 آلاف قتيل، ومئات آلاف المشردين.
