A Seattle-area person has died from the coronovirus, the first fatality in the United States, authorities said Saturday.
The victim was in King County, Wash., which includes the city of Seattle as well as suburbs. There were no other details immediately available.
The announcement came as President Trump prepared to address the nation about the coronavirus threat.
Trump tweeted that he’ll discuss the latest development at a rare Saturday afternoon White House news conference.
“It’s a sad day in our state as we learn that a Washingtonian has died,” Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said in a statement.

The death appears to be a different case from the four cases identified so far that have not been linked to international travel. All four of those cases are on the West Coast, with one teenager in Snohomish County, Wash.
A northern California woman was said to be in serious condition with the virus.
The cases with no link to travel are considered worrying signs of possible outbreaks within the continental U.S., which health officials have said are virtually inevitable.
About 60 people in the U.S. have been infected with the virus that has hopscotched across the globe and killed about 3,000 people.
Most of the deaths and nearly 100,000 cases have been in mainland China but hot spots have popped up in seemingly unrelated spots like South Korea, Iran and northern Italy.
Uncertainty over the virus and its possible widespread economic impact panicked global markets. The Dow Jones Industrial average plunged more than 10% in the worst correction since the 2008 financial crisis.
Trump has sought to downplay the virus, calling it a “hoax” and accusing media of hyping it to damage him politically.
Some Democrats have said Trump could have acted sooner to bolster the U.S. response to the virus. Democratic and Republican lawmakers also have said his request for an additional $2.5 billion to defend against the virus isn’t enough. They’ve signaled they will provide substantially more funding.
