US State Department says Washington is prepared to hold talks with Iran and discuss changing its behavior
The US State Department announced on Tuesday evening Washington's willingness to hold talks with Iran and discuss changing its behavior.
"The president and the secretary of state said we are ready to sit down with officials in Iran, if the behavior of the Iranian regime changes," said State Department spokeswoman Heather Noyert.
"We hope this will happen ... so that its people can live better," said Heather Noiret.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump confirmed his readiness to meet his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rowhani without preconditions.
At a joint press conference with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte at the White House, Trump responded to a question about whether he was prepared to meet Rouhani. "I can meet anyone," he said. "I believe in meetings, especially in situations where there is a risk of war. "He said.
"Of course I will meet with the Iranians if they want to meet," he said, adding that he would insist on no preconditions for such a meeting.
Senior Iranian officials on Tuesday rejected US President Donald Trump's offer of talks without preconditions as "humiliating" and worthless after Trump sought to re-impose sanctions on Tehran after he withdrew from a nuclear deal.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry also stressed the impossibility of any negotiations between Tehran and Washington at the moment, "because Washington proved to be unreliable."
