Amb. Haley: In Fighting Bias, A “New Day” for Israel Has Arrived at the United NationsUnited States ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, vowed on Monday that “a new day” has come for Israel at the United Nations when she addressed the institution’s chronic bias against the Jewish State.
“From now on, every country knows that the United States will not just block anti-Israel measures, we will shine a light on those who are responsible. There won’t be any more free passes for those who bully Israel at the UN,” Haley said at an event in Washington.
“Sometimes we are winning at the UN through persuasion,” she added.
The Jerusalem Post reported that the ambassador was referring to a recent vote in the General Assembly that allowed debate on Hamas’ responsibility for the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
Haley further observed that the Trump administration was “pushing to draw a closer connection between US foreign aid and whether countries support US interests at the UN.” The U.S. recently cut funding to the Palestinian Authority over its refusal to give up its “Pay to Slay” program, a policy that financially rewards Palestinian terrorists and their families. The Trump administration also slashed the funds of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees.
The ambassador praised again the decision taken by the U.S. to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and relocate the embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city. According to Haley, it was an acknowledgment of historical facts.
Haley concluded by advocating for a strong bond between Israel and the U.S. “We live in a world in which terrorist groups and even some countries openly call for Israel’s destruction,” she said. “Many other countries encourage or turn a blind eye to blatant discrimination against Israel.”
“Even here at home, there are some troubling signs,” Haley warned. “On many college campuses, the antisemitic BDS [boycott, divestment and sanctions] movement has become a trendy cause for students and professors who should know better.”
“Standing up against this global pressure campaign on Israel and the Jewish people goes to the heart of our friendship and the heart of America,” Haley observed.
