WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US President Donald H. Trnb has faced a wave of criticism both inside and outside his country because of his positions and remarks at a summit he held with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in the Finnish capital of Helsinki.
Trump's criticism of his country was not limited to Democratic politicians and the media known to oppose him.
Perhaps most troubling to American politicians and the media is Trump's defense of Moscow over allegations of interference in the recent US presidential election and questioning the authenticity of evidence provided by US intelligence agencies.
Asked about the alleged Russian intervention in the US presidential election, Trump said Putin confirmed that Russia had never intervened in US domestic affairs and therefore had no reason to accuse the Russians of intervening in the elections.
Trump also blamed former US administrations for worsening ties with Russia.
The media, known for their support of Trump, notably Fox News, was sharply criticized and felt he had given himself a very bad picture at his joint press conference with Putin after their summit meeting.
Key figures from the Republican Party, the Trump party, House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan and veteran Senator John McCain, also sharply criticized the president for his performance yesterday.
"Trump must realize that Russia is not our ally," Ryan said, adding that "there is no moral equivalence between the United States and Russia, which remains hostile to our ideals and fundamental values."
For his part, McCain said that the press conference yesterday in Helsinki was one of the most "outrageous performances" of an American president and "the worst performance of an American president."
To shed more light on the performance of the US President yesterday, I spoke recently with the Director of the "Center for Arab Dialogue" in Washington, Mr. Subhi Ghandour, noting that I made before the announcement of the US President in the afternoon to accept the results of US intelligence investigations confirm that Russia intervened in the presidential elections But noted that this intervention did not affect the election results.
