Egypt: factions of the Syrian opposition signed a truce in Cairo
A group of Syrian armed factions operating in the north and east of the country signed a ceasefire agreement in Cairo on Monday, mediated by Egypt and Russia, state media reported.
In a statement issued by the Egyptian media in this regard: "To complement the Egyptian efforts to calm the situation in Syria, a number of Syrian armed opposition factions in northern and eastern Syria signed a ceasefire agreement in Cairo under Egyptian auspices, with the guarantee of the Russian Federation, The Syrian Ghad.
The statement added that the agreement included "participating in efforts to combat terrorism, working to reach a political settlement of the Syrian crisis, the return of refugees and displaced persons to their areas and the release of detainees."
The Egyptian media quoted Syrian opposition factions participating in the Cairo negotiations on the cease-fire as saying that "Egypt is the stronghold of Arabism and authorized to end the crisis in Syria, especially with its involvement in armed conflict and non-bias to any party to the conflict."
"We deeply thank the Egyptian president, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, for his efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis and to end the suffering of the Syrian people," the leaders of the Syrian opposition factions said at the end of their participation in the Cairo meetings.
Last week, the Russian Defense Ministry, which is leading Syria's mediation efforts to reconcile government forces and the opposition, announced that Egypt had expressed its willingness to join the process of returning Syrian refugees to their homeland.
