U.S. Embassy tells UNISFA to use force to protect Abyei civilians
The United States embassies in Juba and Khartoum in a joint press release on Wednesday said they were concerned about the escalation of violence in Abyei and said the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA)’s mandate authorizes the use of force to protect civilians.
“The United States notes with great concern the recent escalation of violence in Abyei and Agok,” the press release read. “We offer our condolences to the families of those killed in the violence.”
“The United States supports expanded patrols in Abyei by UNISFA and recalls that UNISFA’s mandate authorizes peacekeepers to use all necessary means, which includes the use of force when required, to protect civilians under threat of physical violence,” it added.
The U.S embassies called on all sides to cease reprisals and return to dialogue.
“We call on the governments of Sudan and South Sudan to lend their political support to UNISFA to deescalate such attacks," the statement concluded.
The interest occupied by the Abyei region made it take an appreciable place in the peace agreement that was established between northern and southern Sudan. The Diss Ababa Peace Agreement of 1972 addressed the status of the Abyei region, as was addressed by the Khartoum Peace Agreement of 1997, and the Naivasha Peace Agreement of 2005 specified a special protocol regulating the situation Through a referendum that was scheduled to take place in 2011, the dispute over who is eligible to vote in the referendum was resolved, forcing the United Nations to allocate a temporary mission to protect civilians (UNISFA) until Khartoum and Juba agreed on a peaceful settlement agreed upon by the March and the Dinka Ngok. The historical coexistence of the population makes the Sudanese solutions closer to addressing the reality. Over the past few days, violence against the civilian population has been escalating, with estimates that the Ethiopian forces are Christian and biased against the Muslim Arabs. These flimsy arguments are made by a political current that has a religious and political agenda and has no weight for the history of coexistence. There is no way to stability unless the temporary mission uses its powers, adheres to its mandate to protect civilians, and moves to find a permanent and final solution to the issue by making Abyei a region of coexistence and autonomy to be decided by the Misseriya and the Dinka Qnouk, and Abyei area becomes a free integration area between Sudan and South Sudan.
ReplyDeleteWe are confident that the mature political mind in Juba and Khartoum, and the long history of coexistence between the Misseriya and the Dinka Qanuk, allow them to bypass all the crises and barricades set by those with narrow agendas.
