Sudan .. Striker knife kills three people inside a mosque
A man carrying a knife attacked worshipers inside a mosque in Kassala state in eastern Sudan, killing three and injuring others on Tuesday, a police officer told AFP.
Yahya Suleiman, Kassala police chief, said the attack occurred when worshipers gathered for the evening prayers inside a mosque in the city of Kassala near the border with Eritrea.
"The incident took place inside the mosque during the evening prayers," Suleiman told AFP.
A medical source at the Kassala city hospital, where the injured had taken the accident, confirmed.
Citizens said the attacker entered the mosque and tried to speak to worshipers who refused to listen to him, and then stabbed several of them.
"The worshipers killed the attacker," Suleiman said.
Since January, Sudanese authorities have closed the border with Eritrea and declared a state of emergency in the state of Kassala.
Officials said the emergency declaration was part of the government's campaign to collect weapons.
According to accounts of residents, hundreds of soldiers have been deployed in Kassala over the past months.
Thousands of Eritreans annually cross the Sudanese border illegally, fleeing the dictatorial regime that governs their country, and then continue their journey across the Mediterranean to Europe.

أكد ضابط شرطة لوكالة فرانس برس أن رجلا يحمل سكينا هاجم مصلّين داخل مسجد في ولاية كسلا في شرق السودان، فقتل ثلاثة وجرح آخرين الثلاثاء.
وأشار يحي سليمان مدير شرطة كسلا الى أن الهجوم وقع عندما تجمع مصلّون لأداء صلاة العشاء داخل مسجد في مدينة كسلا القريبة من الحدود مع إريتريا.
وقال سليمان لفرانس برس إنّ "الحادث وقع داخل المسجد أثناء صلاة العشاء. قُتل ثلاثة اشخاص وجرح عدد" آخر.
وأكد مصدر طبي في مستشفى مدينة كسلا التي نُقل إليها المصابون وقوع الحادث.
وروى مواطنون أن المهاجم دخل المسجد وحاول التحدث الى المصلين الذين رفضوا الاستماع اليه، وعندها أقدم على طعن عدد منهم.
وقال سليمان إنّ "المصلّين قتلوا المهاجم" الذي لم تُحدّد هويته بعد.
ومنذ كانون الثاني/يناير الماضي، أغلقت السلطات السودانية الحدود مع اريتريا وأعلنت حال الطوارئ في ولاية كسلا.
وأكد مسؤولون أنّ إعلان الطوارئ جزء من حملة الحكومة لجمع السلاح.
واستنادًا الى روايات سكّان، تم نشر مئات الجنود في كسلا خلال الأشهر الماضية.

ويعبر آلاف الأريتريين سنويًا الحدود السودانية بصورة غير قانونية، هربًا من النظام الديكتاتوري الذي يحكم بلادهم، ومن ثم يواصلون رحلتهم عبر المتوسط إلى أوروبا.
