Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman
President Assad remains
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has ruled out the departure of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from power.
"Bashar is staying," the crown prince said in an interview with Time magazine. "I think it is not in the interest of the Syrian president to let the Iranians do what they want to do," he said.
On the other hand, the Saudi prince considered it necessary for the US military to maintain its presence in Syria, despite the announcement by President Donald Trump recently that his country's troops will withdraw from there soon.
"We believe US forces should stay for at least a medium, if not long term, period," Bin Salman told the magazine.
He believed that the survival of US forces on Syrian soil is "the last effort to prevent Iran from continuing to expand its influence," according to the magazine.
Is the latest effort to stop Iran, the arch-foe of Saudi Arabia, from continuing to expand its influence with regional allies.
