Opponents of upcoming presidential elections "traitors, gays, colonial remnants"
Algerian Interior Minister Salaheddine Dahmoun violently attacked opponents of the December 12 presidential election, describing them as "traitors, mercenaries, homosexuals and the remnants of colonialism."
Private television channels broadcast the comments of the minister, who was speaking at the National Assembly, the upper chamber of parliament, and was immediately circulated widely on social media, where they sparked much angry reactions.
"Today, this colonialism or the rest of the colonialism, a colonial ideology that is still alive," the minister said, "is used by some children or semi-Algerians who are traitors, mercenaries, homosexuals and homosexuals whom we know one by one. Without explicitly naming those whom he targeted.
The minister recalled statements by Algerian nationalists Cheikh Bouamama and Abdelhamid Ben Badis of the 19th and 20th centuries calling for a fight against colonial France, saying, "We must be united and give a lesson on December 12 to show the unity of the Algerian people and protect our independence."
Presidential elections are being held in Algeria on December 12 to choose a successor to former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who resigned in April under pressure from the street and the army.
The country has been protesting against the regime since February 22, and protesters reject the presidential election, saying it aims to reproduce the former regime.

هاجم وزير الداخليّة الجزائري صلاح الدين دحمون بعنف الثلاثاء المعارضين للانتخابات الرئاسيّة المقرّرة في 12 كانون الأوّل/ديسمبر، واصفًا إيّاهم بأنّهم "خونة ومرتزقة ومثليّون جنسيًّا وبقايا استعمار".
وبثّت قنوات تلفزيونيّة خاصّة تصريحات الوزير الذي كان يتحدّث في مجلس الأمّة، الغرفة العليا للبرلمان، وتمّ تداولها فورًا على نطاق واسع على شبكات التواصل الاجتماعي حيث أثارت ردود فعل غاضبة بمعظمها.
وقال الوزير "اليوم هذا الاستعمار أو ما بقي من الاستعمار، وهو فكر استعماري ما زال (..) حيًّا لدى البعض، يستعمل بعض الأولاد أو أشباه الجزائريّين من خونة ومرتزقة وشواذ ومثليين نعرفهم واحدًا واحدًا. فهم ليسوا مِنّا ونحن لسنا منهم"، وذلك من دون أن يسمّي بشكل صريح أولئك الذين استهدفهم بكلامه.
واستذكر الوزير مقولات للقوميَّين الجزائريَّين الشيخ بوعمامة وعبد الحميد بن باديس من القرنين التاسع عشر والعشرين تدعو إلى محاربة فرنسا الاستعماريّة، قائلًا "يجب أن نكون موحّدين وأن نعطي درسًا في 12 كانون الأوّل/ديسمبر لإظهار وحدة الشعب الجزائري وحماية استقلالنا".
وتُنظّم في الجزائر في 12 كانون الأوّل/ديسمبر انتخابات رئاسيّة لاختيار خلف للرئيس السابق عبد العزيز بوتفليقة الذي استقال في نيسان/أبريل تحت ضغط الشارع والجيش.

وتشهد البلاد حركة احتجاج ضدّ النظام منذ 22 شباط/فبراير، ويرفض المحتجّون الانتخابات الرئاسيّة معتبرين أنّها تهدف إلى إعادة إنتاج النظام السابق.
