Meet the young Sudanese activist explaining climate change through Islam

Lina Yassin was 15 years old when the floods of Sudan struck in 2013. These floods were the worst in Sudan in almost a quarter of a century, when they swept about 14 states, damaged nearly half a million people, killed 50 and injured 70 others, according to official figures.
At the time, Yassine, a high school student, volunteered to help with relief operations in her city, and she became, in fact, wondering why Sudan was not prepared to deal with catastrophic climatic conditions to anticipate floods or others.
"That experience changed my life because I knew the victims personally," Yassin said in a contact with euronews. "Since then, I started reading about the floods and found many articles related to climate change."
"My mind flew," he said, because no one was talking about climate change in Sudan, even if the country was affected by it.
After the disaster, Yassin began writing regular articles for Al-Thanawiya newspaper on the issue: She wanted people to get involved as broadly as possible on a topic that she thought would change her country forever.
Only two years later, articles by Yassin, 21, were published in the most prestigious Sudanese newspapers, so her participation in United Nations seminars on climate change was not surprising, nor her participation in the last United Nations Conference in Madrid (COP25).
Yassin explains the dilemma in her country, and her explanation extends to a large part of the Arab world and the developing worlds: In Sudan, there is a belief that climate change is a topic that concerns only strangers or scholars and not everyone's responsibility. In my articles I tried to show the impact of the environmental crisis on our daily life. "
Islam as a means
Yassin chose to approach the issue of climate change in some of her articles that were published in the Arabic language in a different way, trying to explain the crisis through Islamic concepts, taking into account the percentage of religiosity among the Sudanese people.
"In Islam, everything that happens may be understood as" God's plan, "explains Yassen to euronews." This means that for some believers, climate change may in fact be God's will, and therefore no question should be asked about it. "
However, despite the conviction and awareness of some believers, Yassin cries out for the Qur’an and says that he forbade “spoiling the earth” what it says and that “God sent man to the earth to protect it” (and do not spoil the land after its repair - Al-A'raf 56).
Obstacles imposed by nationality
Yassin says that she was chosen several months ago by the United Nations to participate in a climate summit in New York, but she faced several obstacles, imposed by her Sudanese nationality.
"I was very excited to participate because the summit was a first opportunity for young people like me to go to New York and talk about climate change. Unfortunately, the US embassy in Khartoum was closed at the time, which made the process of obtaining a visa very complex," added Yassin.
"Only because of the passport I carry, and the country where I was born, I lost an opportunity, which could have contributed to building my future and the future of environmental activity in my country," she concluded.

كانت لينا ياسين تبلغ 15 عاماً من العمر عندما ضربت فيضانات السودان في العام 2013. كانت تلك الفيضانات الأسوأ في السودان منذ ربع قرن تقريباً، إذ اجتاحت نحو 14 ولاية، وألحقت ضرراً بنحو نصف مليون نسمة وقتلت 50 وجرحت 70 آخرين، بحسب الأرقام الرسمية.
وقتئذ تطوعت ياسين، تلميذة الثانوية، للمساعدة في عمليات الإغاثة في مدينتها، وصارت، بواقع الحال، تتساءل لمَ لم يكن السودان مهيئاً للتعامل مع ظروف مناخية كارثية لاستباق الفيضانات أوغيرها.
في اتصال أجرته يورونيوز معها، تقول ياسين "غيرت تلك التجربة حياتي لأني كنت أعرف الضحايا شخصياً" وتضيف "منذ ذلك الوقت بدأت أقرأ عن الفيضانات ووجدت الكثير من المقالات المرتبطة بالتغير المناخي".
وتعقب ":طار عقلي" لأن أحداً لم يكن يتحدث عن التغير المناخي ي السودان، حتى ولو كانت البلاد متأثرة به".
بدأت ياسين بعد الكارثة تكتب مقالات دورية لجريدة الثانوية عن المسألة: كانت تريد أن يتورط الناس بأكبر شكل ممكن في موضوع اعتقدت أنه سيغيّر بلادها إلى الأبد.
وبعد سنتين فقط نُشرت مقالات ياسين (21 عاماً) في أعرق الصحف السودانية، ولذا، لم تكن مشاركتها في ندوات عقدتها الأمم المتحدة حول التغير المناخي، مفاجئة، ولا مشاركتها في مؤتمر الأمم المتحدة الأخير في مدريد (COP25).
تشرح ياسين المعضلة في بلادها، وشرحها ينسحب على قسم كبير من العالم العربي، والعوالم النامية: في السودان، هناك اعتقاد أن التغير المناخي موضوع يشغل فقط غرباء الأطوار أو العلماء وليس من مسؤولية الجميع. في مقالاتي حاولت إظهار أثر الأزمة البيئة على حياتنا اليومية".
الإسلام كوسيلة
اختارت ياسين أن تقارب مسألة التغير المناخي في بعض مقالاتها التي نشرت في اللغة العربية بطريقة مختلفة، محاولة شرح الأزمة عبر المفاهيم الإسلامية، آخذة بعين الاعتبار نسبة التدين لدى الشعب السوداني.
وتوضح ياسين ليورونيوز قائلة "في الإسلام، كل ما يحدث قد يُفهم على أنه "خطة الله". وهذا يعني أن التغير المناخي، بالنسبة إلى بعض المؤمنين، قد يكون في واقع الأمر إرادة الله، ولذا لا يجب طرح استفهام حوله.
غير أن ياسين، رغم قناعة وإدراك بعض المؤمنين، تستنجد بالقرآن وتقول إنه نهى عن "إفساد الأرض" ما جاء فيه وإن "الله أرسل الإنسان إلى الأرض لحمايتها" (ولا تُفسدوا في الأَرض بعد إِصْلاحها - الأعراف 56).
عوائق تفرضها الجنسية
تقول ياسين إنه تم اختيارها منذ عدّة أشهر من قبل الأمم المتحدة للمشاركة في قمة حول المناخ في نيويورك ولكنها اصطدمت بعوائق عدة، فرضتها جنسيتها السودانية.
وتضيف ياسين "كنت متحمسة جداً للمشاركة لأن القمة كانت بمثابة فرصة أولى بالنسبة للشباب مثلي للذهاب إلى نيويورك والتحدث عن التغير المناخي. للأسف، كانت السفارة الأميركية في الخرطوم مغلقة في ذلك الوقت، ما جعل من عملية الحصول على تأشيرة عملية معقدة جداً".
وتختتم بالقول "فقط بسبب جواز السفر الذي أحمله، والبلد حيث ولدت، خسرت فرصة، كان من الممكن أن تسهم في بناء مستقبلي ومستقبل النشاط البيئي في بلادي".
