Dear Friend
My name is Ximena Murillo and I was born in Bolivia, one of the poorest and most vulnerable countries in Latin America
Growing up in the city of La Paz during the worst economic crisis in my country’s history, I saw how women suffered the impact of perpetual poverty and political strife. I made a vow to help the women of my country break through the barriers that kept them and their families in extreme poverty – but I wasn’t quite sure how to turn my vow into positive action
After completing my education in the U.S., I attended the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U). It was transformative to spend three days surrounded by hundreds of student leaders – just like me – who believed that young people have the power to change the future and improve the world.
Thanks to CGI U, I secured my first grant from the Pat Tillman Foundation to launch a small network of community centers throughout rural Bolivia, where women could learn to read, write, get access to health care, and start small businesses. That was the beginning of United4Change (U4C), which has grown into a strong nonprofit organization that’s helping thousands of Bolivian women lead healthier, happier lives
CGI U gave me the vision, the confidence, and the support to build a new organization that supports women in my country as well as in Tanzania and Kenya, to break through the limits imposed on them by poverty and injustice
During October 19-21, more than 1,000 student leaders will gather at The University of Chicago for another amazing CGI U meeting. I am inspired yet again as I think about all these idealistic young people and their commitment to building a better world
