Eritrea asks Russia to help it lift international sanctions
Eritrea has asked Russia to work officially with it to lift the UN sanctions imposed on it since 2009. This came during a meeting of Russian diplomatic envoy with President Isaias Afwerki on the nineteenth of this month. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Lundovsky met with the Eritrean president and foreign minister in the capital Asmara. At the meeting, the president asked the Russian leadership to help Eritrea lift international sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council, as Russia is a veto-wielding member of the UN Security Council and could contribute significantly to lifting sanctions. The Russian envoy pointed out that the lifting of international sanctions on Eritrea will undoubtedly contribute to the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two countries.
For its part, Eritrea hoped that improved relations with Djibouti, Somalia and Ethiopia could contribute to the lifting of international sanctions. It is worth mentioning that the three countries' strongness in the past was one of the reasons that led to the imposition of sanctions on Eritrea in agreement with the US administration of President Barack Obama.
If international sanctions are lifted, Eritrea can buy spare parts for Eritrean air-force jets from Russia, with 75 percent of air force aircraft out of service due to lack of spare parts.
