?What is the purpose of the meeting between Netanyahu and King Abdullah
Meir Shamir
For the first time in a year and a half, the Prime Minister of Israel and the King of Jordan met to coordinate their positions ahead of Trump's peace program
Netanyahu secretly visited Jordan on Monday afternoon. He was accompanied by a small number of advisers, including Mossad chief Yossi Cohen and the economic adviser (referring to the content of the meeting). This is the first meeting between the two leaders since the incident occurred a year ago, in which two Jordanian nationals were killed. Since then, Israel has apologized, paid compensation, and even put it Ambassador Ambassador Weissford instead of Ambassador Samain Shline.
The meeting comes ahead of the Trump peace program and before US administration envoys, Jason Greenblatt and Jared Kouchner, arrive in the region. It is estimated that prior to the presentation of the peace program, in order to start with a positive and constructive atmosphere, the Americans will present a program for the rehabilitation of Gaza, funded by the Gulf States and assisted by Israel, Egypt and Jordan.
It should be noted that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is not only opposed to the Tramp peace program but also opposes the Gaza rehabilitation program, despite the serious humanitarian situation facing Gazans.
Therefore, there is importance to Israeli-Jordanian coordination, especially in light of the lack of experience of the current US administration. Both sides have gone through a similar round of negotiations (the last at the end of Obama's term, when US Secretary of State John Kerry made last efforts to impose an Israeli-Palestinian settlement).
The Egyptians also announced that the Rafah crossing would be open in the coming months as well. This step is very important on their part and indicates their willingness to cooperate with the Americans. The only question is who will manage the Gaza reconstruction project on the ground, a project in which large sums will be invested. As mentioned earlier, Abbas opposes any talks with Trump and claims that this is an initiative to perpetuate Hamas rule
