...Marriage protects the heart
A research review found that uninsured, divorced and widowed people are at higher risk for heart disease and stroke than other married couples.
The study was led by Chun Wai Wong, a researcher in cardiovascular disease at the University of Kelley and at the Department of Cardiology at Royal Stock Hospital in Stoke-on-Trent, both in the United Kingdom. The results were published in the journal Heart.
To find out the impact of the family situation on heart disease, the researchers reviewed 34 studies and analyzed them.
The results showed that people who never married, divorced or widowed were 42 percent more likely to develop cardiovascular disease than married participants.
In addition, the risk of coronary artery disease in divorced, widowed and uninsured patients increased by 16 percent, with a 42 percent chance of death from the problem. Also, they are more likely to die because of a stroke by 55 percent.
