"A useless law provokes outrage"
Maayan bin Hamo
Although everyone knows that the "law of the muezzin" is not supposed to be ratified, this law still raises a disagreement among Knesset members: "You are racist and fascist"
A heated debate broke out Tuesday in the Knesset Legislation Committee on the draft of the muezzin's law, which prohibits the use of loudspeakers in places of worship because of the uproar. MK Jamal Zahalka, a member of the "Joint List" party during the debate, shouted angrily: "You are racists and fascists, looking for death only." In response to his comments, MK Motti Yogev, from the right-wing Jewish House party, attacked him: "Go to the parliament in Syria, you terrorist."
It seems that despite the uproar, everyone knows that there is no possibility of ratifying the "law of the muezzin" on first reading. This morning MK Moshe Gafni, of the ultra-Orthodox party Yahdut HaTorah, at the request of Knesset Member Ahmed Tibi of the Joint List party, explained that the haredi parties oppose the law of the muezzin and do not expect the law to be approved.
Ghaffni spoke about the cooperation between the parties and the Arab parties on the subject, explaining: "We agreed that this law will not progress. It is outrageous and useless. There is a law to ban excitation and can provide a solution, but the police do not use means to address the noise. This bill would, for example, consider for example those living in Indonesia that Israel wants to ban the use of the muezzin's voice in mosques. "
In his letter to members of the Committee, the Legal Counsel of the Legislative Committee pointed out today that the draft law posed legal difficulties. In addition, he claimed in his letter explaining: "We believe that a solution to the causes of noise can be found in the draft law."
