The Israeli Shin Bet Security Service and the police announced the arrest of a former Israeli minister on charges of spying for Iran and providing serious information.
The two security apparatuses said in a joint statement published by the Yediot Aharonot website that former minister Junin Segev was arrested on charges of "spying for Iran and serving the enemy against Israel."
The statement pointed out that "Segev" contacted officials of the Iranian embassy in Nigeria in 2012, met them later there, gave them serious security information, and traveled to Iran twice.
The police arrested the former minister last month after a failed attempt to enter Equatorial Guinea in May 2018 and handed him over to the Israeli authorities at the latter's request. The Shin Bet interrogated him and arrested him.
The Iranian intelligence service recruited "Segev" as its agent, who in turn tried to recruit Israelis to spy on Iran, and gave Segev to Tehran information on the Israeli energy market and security sites, according to the statement.
The statement said that the former Israeli minister was a member of the Security Cabinet and met with Iranian officials in different parts of the world.
